World Photography Day was yesterday 📸 so I’m sharing 5 powerful lessons that completely changed how I shoot food:
1️⃣ Light is everything:
Harsh light flattens food, but soft light (a window, diffuser, or softbox at 5600K) makes colours pop and textures shine.
2️⃣ Angles tell stories:
Shoot overhead for flat dishes like pizzas or mezze, 45° to show depth in bowls and cakes, and straight-on for height (think burgers or layered desserts).
3️⃣ Simplicity wins:
One hero dish with a few supporting props is all you need. Clutter distracts. Clean styling keeps the focus where it belongs, on the food.
4️⃣ Texture makes people taste it:
A glossy drizzle of syrup, sugar dust, or a crack in the crust makes food feel tangible through the screen. Details = appetite.
5️⃣ Editing is seasoning:
Adjust exposure, highlights, and shadows to enhance what’s already there. The goal is natural, mouthwatering photos, not neon filters.
Here’s the truth 🤗 you don’t become better by waiting for the “perfect setup.” You learn by shooting, experimenting, and practicing over and over again.
