Jesus is God (from the Beginning)
While I was doing my daily devotional of translating 3 Bible verses from its original language, I came across an exciting truth which is buried in the difficulties of translating from one language to another. Now, we don’t need to know Bible languages to find the truth. However, knowing the Bible languages occasionally allows you to discover “hidden gems” of truth, or subtle nuances that are lost in translation. John 8:24–25 is a perfect example.
In this passage, Jesus is debating with the Jewish leaders about where He came from and where He will be going. In verse 23, Jesus said, “You are from below. I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world” (CSB).
And then Jesus said in verse 24 (my translation), “For unless you all believe that I AM, you will die in your sins.” Now, why did I emphasize “I am?” First, note that in every major translation, it says, “I am he.” The “he” is supplied by the translators to smooth it out in English, but the word “he” does not appear in the original language as you might expect. Second, the way it is written in Greek is emphatic. Third, since there is no predicate supplied for “I am”, this is a clear allusion to Exodus 3:14, where God told Moses to tell Israel, “I AM has sent me to you.” In the Gospel of John, Jesus is clearly equating Himself to the great “I AM”, eternal Yahweh God. The phrase, “I AM” appears 24 times in John, and 7 times it appears without a predicate. Another clear example is John 8:58 where Jesus says, “Truly I tell you, before Abraham was, I AM.”
Things become even more interesting in John 8:25. My very literal translation from the Greek reads, “Then they said to him, ‘Who are you?’ Jesus said to them, ‘The beginning, which that even I am speaking to you.” Jesus’ response is difficult to translate. Most render something like the CSB, “Exactly what I’ve been telling you from the very beginning.” However, while this is smoother English, this is not the best translation to bring out the theological force of Jesus’ statement. In response to the question to Jesus, “Who are you?” one Greek scholar translates, “From the beginning! Exactly what I’ve been speaking to you.”[1] In addition to claiming to be the great I AM, Jesus is also reiterating what was said about Him in John 1:1, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
The truth about the Divinity of Jesus is hidden everywhere in plain sight, especially in the Gospel of John. Let us not forget this important truth found in Scripture and always be ready to defend that Jesus is God, from the beginning!
