Hey all!

It’s been a minute, huh?

Sorry about our flagging social media presence lately. We’re in the middle of a change of approach for our IG and Facebook. More on that soon ;)

Anyway, we have already dropped two episodes of our new seasons; Wandering But Not Lost!

The thesis statement for this season is 2-pronged…

If you’re a Christian who is happily connected to a Church, Christian community, or any other formal body of believers, praise God that you are putting down roots in a place that is fostering in you a deep love of Jesus and desire to serve Him with your whole life! We also encourage you to remember that “God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.” (Acts 17:24). Rather, He chooses to make His home in earthen vessels (2 Corinthians 4:7). Our hope is that by wandering with us this season you will identify the transcendent qualities of God that are to be exemplified in His people (see Ephesians 2:19-21 as well)

If you find yourself in a season of wandering; disconnected from a formal Church body or deconstructing your experience in one, remember that the Lord is the God of the wanderer! He journeyed with a caravan of refugees for 40 years of exile and preserved His people throughout centuries of salvation history even as they faced false gods, wicked rulers, and nations greater than themselves. He walks alongside His people with such fidelity that they can boldly proclaim, “Where can I go from Your Spirit, or where can I flee from Your Presence?” (Psalm 139:7). We encourage you to remember that we are called to be a part of a people and God is endlessly creative in His ability to preserve a people for Himself in unbelievable circumstances (1 Peter 2:9).

I told you we’d have some goodies for ya ;)

This week’s episode is from our recurring, patreon-exclusive season, Jesus in the Movies, which provides a forum for discussions about media, reviews of movies and TV shows, and how these things reflect truths about the character of Jesus, albeit unintentionally at times.

In this episode--yep, that's right--Moanna. After this conversation, all three of us would be willing to bet a Christian was somewhere on the team of people who directed or wrote for this fantastic film. Enjoy this free episode. You can find all our other JITM episodes on our Patreon!

My drive to work can sometimes be a harrowing experience. For a few years now, I’ve been in a season of extreme discontent with my job. I often have to remind myself that God is using me at work even when it feels pointless. So, driving to a place where so much of my effort seems futile regularly puts me in a pretty terrible mood.

This morning, I decided to put on some worship music to combat the creeping dread. A few Christmas songs here, some City Alight there and I was in a better mood at 7am on a weekday than I have been in a long time. In this welcome shift from the norm, the Lord brought my mind to another Christmas hymn, “Joy Has Dawned”; a triumphant anthem that tells of the transforming power of the joy that we have in Jesus Christ. This joy broke into my commute to work this morning unannounced and unexpected. While I was content to wallow in my frustration, joy arrived. With it, I was able to embrace joy as steadfast and not something dependent on circumstance.

When I remember that the miracle of Christmas - Jesus Christ’s breaking into a dark world - is proof that God thinks I’m worth dying for, I am anchored in hope that He loves me enough to walk with me through every season. In this way, joy isn’t the absence of trials. It’s the presence of a perspective that brings meaning, comfort, and life into dark places.

2,000 years ago this meant the Savior of the world being born to refugee parents in a smelly manger. Today, it means God’s children finding rest in the midst of challenge because they know how deeply they are loved and pursued by their Heavenly Father.

May joy break through for all of us as we wait, with expectation, this Advent season.

“And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” - Luke 10:41-42

I’ve been thinking about what it means to choose “that good (better) part”. Like Martha, I often find myself “worried and troubled about many things” and my first inclination is to identify “that better part” simply as rest; intentionally removing myself from work for a time. However, the Lord expanded my interpretation of this Scripture as not only resting but, like Mary, seeing Jesus in the midst of busyness. This made me consider the ways Jesus has revealed Himself to me this week:

In the persistence of a co-worker to not only support our students but to build strong relationships with our staff team

In the love of two friends who came to visit us for the week with their daughter ❤️

In the changing of the seasons and how they reflect the Lord’s beauty and faithfulness

Through God’s Word via my Bible reading plan, as I encounter Scripture passages that make me know and love the Lord more each day

As we seek the better part in the midst of so many other things that require our attention, let us pray that God will open our eyes to see Him in our midst more clearly.

I (Charles) have a wonderful gift in my wife . Being the parents of our two kids is the greatest joy and adventure of our lives. But it's also a welcome challenge and there is no one I'd rather do it with than Chelsea.

That is why I am so grateful for and her book "To Light their Way: A Collection of Prayers and Liturgies for Parents". It is going to give us words and prayers for a wide variety of challenges and situations we will face as parents enabling us as a couple to seek the Lord and intercede for our children and our family. I highly encourage parents out there to purchase this book as a resource for the adventure of parenting!

“A little lifting up of the heart suffices; a little remembrance of God, an interior act of adoration, even though made on the march and with sword in hand, are prayers which, short though they may be, are nevertheless very pleasing to God, and far from making a soldier lose his courage on the most dangerous occasions, bolster it.” - Brother Lawrence, Practice of the Presence of God

I’ve been going for more walks during my breaks at work lately. I’m incredibly fortunate to work at a school with such lush nature around the campus!

These walks have been helpful because I have a tendency to not rest until I don’t have anything else to do. Turns out, that doesn’t happen much 😉

Letting God shift my view of work has meant allowing myself to enjoy quiet moments to rest and realign my heart with His, even when I’m busy.

May we all enter into the rest of Christ in our vocations today! For His yolk is easy and His burden is light (Matthew 11:28-30)

Earlier this week the three guys at the well channeled our inner Ni**od (Genesis 8:10-12) and went axe throwing at Stumpy’s Hatchet House Columbia MD!

We also had some productive chats about next season 😉
