Hey folks. Apologies that you haven't heard from us in a while. We haven't been on the air for a few weeks and may not be for a few weeks more, for reasons concerning health and more. 102.3 WHIV FM New Orleans has been kind enough to run old episodes while things settle down with life, the universe and everything. But we will be back to bring you more voices from the veteran community; rants about paid-patriotism and what we can do about it; arts and events; and of course, the innermost thoughts of playwright and marine veteran Jeff Key. And other guests!

We appreciate your support and for being a part of the movement.

I have a love/hate relationship with the VA, but Goldsmith is right on the money. Our system of care needs the support of both the government and the public for reasons like the ones outlined in this article.

Veterans freely acknowledge VA has problems, but we overwhelmingly prefer to get our care at VA because it’s a system designed to serve us.

Ariel often speaks about how awful it is being a woman veteran when visiting the VA. It's also hard in a lot of other ways. More women are serving in the military than any other time in history, but the hyper-masculine culture they serve in may never change. They will always stand out, both in service and later as a civilian.

When leaving the service, women are often faced with a slew of challenges as they try to assimilate into civilian life.

This bill would sell vets to the Koch brothers and their business partners. The choice program at the VA covers those who face long waits and other problems at the VA. To expand the program is contentious enough. This would ensure the failure of the VA system, putting the wealthy first and the vets second.

A bill by a Colorado Republican would give much wider access to private-sector doctors than other proposals under debate on Capitol Hill.

Today we’re running an episode last year when we spoke to Anita Sugimura, Director of the film “Battlefield:Home” about what the transition from war to home is like for a number of service members. The film recently showed at a film festival and will hopefully in theaters soon! Check it out:

"Battlefield: Home Breaking the Silence," takes an unflinching look at the aftermath of war and the systems that are failing our veterans and their families. It’s also a validation that healing can occur when “resources” have human eyes and hearts and traumatized people get to tell their stories. Fi...

“The answer couldn’t be more straightforward: It goes directly to private corporations and much of it is then wasted on useless overhead, fat executive salaries, and startling (yet commonplace) cost overruns on weapons systems and other military hardware that, in the end, won’t even perform as promised. Too often the result is weapons that aren’t needed at prices we can’t afford. If anyone truly wanted to help the troops, loosening the corporate grip on the Pentagon budget would be an excellent place to start.”

The Pentagon’s spending is a scandal of epic proportions.

“The willingness to treat veterans as a single constituency not only does a disservice to veterans as individuals, but it continues to isolate the military from the civilian population, even after they have finished serving. Veterans have over time become a much smaller subsection of the country, facing a “thank you for your service” culture that avoids grappling with the issue of how we as a nation use military force. The desire to disproportionately weight veterans’ opinions on this, or any, issue reflects a broader trend of ceding them moral authority, in exchange for ignorance and detachment from the wars they have been asked to fight.”

The isolation of the military to a few small communities has made it easier than ever to co-opt military service.

Ray, here. When I was a boy of 20, I was being stupid one day and got arrested for possession of ma*****na and ma*****na paraphernalia in the suburbs of NJ. I paid fines and did a year of probation to have it expunged. In 2003, I told this to my Army recruiter and wrote it on a standard form. A year or so later, I was a specialist in the Army Field Artillery, was given a secret security clearance, and served 5 more years. Went to war and came home with a bit of PTSD and a mTBI, promoted to Sergeant and back to war. I then got out, finished college and grad school on my GI Bill, and started working to help other Veterans as a social worker and researcher.

Give them their citizenship. They are better citizens than 92.7% of the rest of the US population who never served. They deserve they same opportunity I had.

There were folks I served with who joined for the path to citizenship, and they were good soldiers and good friends. If one of them were to be deported because of a drug charge, that is a slap in the face to the veteran community. These folks are no different than you or I. All that separates us is a crumbly old piece of paper with some numbers on it, that make us legally required to give a third of our money to a system that only works for those building more weapons and keeping us at war.

In recent years, a growing number of undocumented immigrants have joined the armed forces -- only to be deported later.

Sweeping these benefits will endanger the lives and well being of thousands of Vietnam Veterans who cannot work because of disabilities they came home from war with. This is the White House and the VA saying it's cheaper to let them die. Furthermore, the cuts proposed would weaken the ability for the VA to provide services and funnel more into the private healthcare industry. This is completely unacceptable. Monday is Memorial Day, btw.

Something to pay attention to - the replacement of the M4 would be the perfect excuse to build millions of new weapons with your tax dollars. And what will become of the millions of M16s and M4s in surplus? They will be sold to other countries, some who may use those very weapons against us or to oppress their own citizens. The profits of those sales will return to the CEOs and high-level contractor employees. And you paid for it.

"Marines United is a clear illustration of how s*xual harassment is about power, not s*x. If the men involved in this group just wanted a trove of s*xually titillating photos, they could have shared p**n or naked images of any random women. Instead, they targeted their fellow Marines. By violating their co-workers’ privacy and reducing them to s*x objects, members of Marines United asserted power over the women in their ranks."
