Banihal Cart road which connected Jammu with Srinagar was thrown open to the public in 1922. The road existed before also since 1890s but its use was limited to members of royal family only. This road also had a tunnel(Old banihal Tunnel) which was completed by 1920s and the length of that tunnel was only 150 yards.
Before that the Jhelum Valley road( Jammu--Delhi--Lahore--Kohala--Muzzafarabad ---Srinagar ), was the lone dependable connection between Kashmir and the rest of the world.
Jawahar tunnel also called Banihal Tunnel(length 2.85 km) was constructed between 1954 and 1956 and was inaugurated in 1956 and became fully operational since 1959.

11 dead, 27 injured after bus plunges into gorge in J&K’s Poonch
Several people suffer life-threatening injuries
Mandi (Poonch), Sep 14: At least 11 people died and 27 others were injured after a bus they were travelling in met with an accident in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.

Officials told Greater Kashmir that a bus [registration number JK12 1419] carrying 24-30 passengers from Mandi to Saujiyan skidded off the road at Bareri Nallah and plunged into a deep gorge today morning.

A major rescue operation was launched by the army, police and locals, they said.

DIG DKR INAUGURATES MINI NEST AT KAROL RAMBAN DIG DKR INAUGURATED A MINI NEST MAINTAINED BY DISTRICT POLICE RAMBAN Deputy inspector general of police of doda kishtwar ramban range Dr Sunil Gupta IPS today inaugurated a mini nest at karol ramban. This mini nest built by NHAI is having roadside facilities including canteen, passenger shed, rest rooms for men and women. It was off late taken over by district police ramban to operate it on no profit and no loss basis. It is pertinent to mention here that district police ramban has taken this initiative for the welfare of families of martyrs who have laid down their precious lives in the service of this nation. The profit accrued out of this venture would be shared with the families of martyrs. DIG DKR on this occasion while appreciating the efforts of district police ramban particularly SSP Ramban Ms Mohita Sharma said “ this brain child of SSP Ramban Ms Mohita Sharma IPS will certainly contribute a lot to the welfare of destitute families of our martyrs. And it will also provide sigh of relief to the defence personnel and civilian who regularly commute on this national highway.” Besides SSP Ramban Mohita Sharma, other dignitaries in the inugral function included Chairman MC Ramban Ms Sunita Sumberya, DDC member Ms Renuka Katoch, ADC Ramban Sh Harbans Lal, ASP Ramban Ms Rajni Sharma and members of civil society. The general public of Ramban appreciated this initiative of district police ramban.
