Nuclear weapons and climate change are the two existential threats that face us today. I’m protesting because I want people to know that AWE Burghfield is here, that while there’s an important vote in Westminster later this year on whether Trident will be renewed, in fact I believe that's a farce as the building work is going on now. Nuclear weapons are being made right here, today.

I’d studied psychology and philosophy at university. But after I’d graduated I read the first edition of The Ecologist and it talked about climate change, nuclear weapons and a refugee crisis. I found that I was 20 years old, well-educated, but I didn’t know anything about any of this.

I volunteered to help community development in Cameroon with my husband and while we were there we asked local people what we could do to help. They said: go home, that’s where the policies that damage our country come from.

This is Angie, a woman with liberal charm and an unforgiving sense of purpose. I met Angie just a few miles from Reading at AWE Burghfield, where her Ploughshares group have organised a month-long series of protests against Trident, the UKs nuclear deterrent system.

Angie’s story of non-violent activism includes cutting fences at Greenham Common in the 1980s and disarming a BAE Hawk jet due to fly to Indonesia to attack East Timor in 1996.

Whatever you feel about the issues and the tactics, I wanted to find out what drives Angie, and so many like her, to spend her days and her decades in the sun and the rain – and very often in prison – standing up for what they believe in.

I think it's important to take responsibility for your actions and your decisions. We all make poor choices sometimes, things don't always turn out the way we want them to, and we have to deal with the consequences.

But it is worthwhile, every now and again, stopping and thinking, when did you last do something for the very first time? It is a great way to challenge yourself and create new experiences - which is what life is all about.

We moved south to this house in 1980 and have lived in it for 35 years. We have traveled all over the world, made so many new friends and loved bringing up our family here. But now that we have retired, the boys have grown up and have families of their own, we decided it was time for a new adventure.

Tomorrow, we leave our lovely home and neighbourhood and move back to be close to our extended family in the quiet Scottish town where we were born.

The most important thing to me is my family. I'm so lucky to have a great fiancée, three of the cutest dogs, and a baby on the way too. Although I have no idea what in the world
happens when the little one pops out...

The best advice I ever had was to keep trying, it will be worth it in the end. I guess I'll pass that on to my son or daughter one day.

You are alone for a lot of the time, so you've got to be comfortable in your own company if you want to be a painter. And even if I have a day when I don't paint, I spend some time in the studio just reviewing and contemplating what has already been done. You just never know what may happen.

I've done hundreds of paintings, I've lost count. Which is my best? Maybe the next one.

Apart from a few short periods in my life, I've painted pretty much continuously since I was a teenager.

Days are busy with work, so I paint at night. I use materials that look good in a low light, like gold leaf or glitter. And I like to work with the painting flat on the floor too, although it is hard on the knees.

Nearly 15 years ago I became a journalist, because I believed it gave everyone a voice. But I think there is so much news these days, so much ‘content’, that sometimes we forget the importance of stopping, listening, learning. Whether it is online, or down the pub, it’s got to be about making real connections with people. http://ow.ly/i/aeZjc

Since my dad passed away, my outlook on life took an unexpected turn. Family, health and happiness, a massive cliche, but it all means that finding a work/life balance really is a priority. So I've changed my job, to be closer to home, and today is my last day.
