Escape Pods – Helena Hauff

Helena Hauff is simply one of the most exciting DJs on the planet, playing a mix of; electro, techno, acid house and EBM in energetic vinyl only sessions.

Originally from Hamburg, Helena learnt her trade as a resident DJ at the intimate Golden Pudel Club before venturing out to tour the world. She’s played at renowned festivals including Movement Detroit, Sónar Festival Barcelona and Field Day London. In 2017 she became the first-ever female DJ to be awarded the prestigious ‘Essential Mix of the Year’ by BBC Radio 1.

Helena has a unique sound as a music producer with three highly acclaimed albums under her belt recorded for Ninja Tune, Dark Entries Records and Werkdiscs - preferring a 'less is more' approach to sound design using analogue machines. Helena also curates and runs her own excellent Return to Disorder record label that has featured releases from; UMWELT, Nite Flight, L.F.T and dynArec.

Helena is well known for keeping away from social media, smart-phones and all the trappings of 21st century life, yet still manages to survive perfectly well... Looks like we’re going to have to fit in a crate of records or two in the back as The Hauff joins us for Escape Pods…

Escape Pods – Paul Hartnoll (Orbital)

Paul is one of the most highly respected electronic music producers on the planet, best known for Orbital – the band started with his brother back in 1987.

Including a game changing performance on the NME stage at Glastonbury Fest in 1994, which has been listed as one of the 10 top sets of all time played at the famous festival. Paul even performed ‘Where is it Going’ with Professor Steven Hawking at the opening ceremony of the London Para Olympic games.

Paul Hartnoll has also pursued a solo path during times away from the band - making music with artists including Robert Smith from The Cure and Vince Clarke from Depeche Mode and Erasure. He’s also an absolute gentleman and a scholar...

Escape Pods – Daniele Baldelli

Daniele Baldelli is best known as the creator of the Cosmic sound named after his DJ residency at the legendary Cosmic Club in Italy in the late 1970s. Baldelli’s story as a DJ began even earlier in the late 1960s at the Tana, Tabu and Baia Degli Angeli clubs where he pioneered many DJing techniques independently of the more widely recognised New York disco scene. Perhaps the most unique technique he employed in his sets was to change the speed of records, mostly from 45rpm to 33rpm, to find songs that sounded entirely different for the Cosmic dance floor.
Daniele continues to be a prolific producer as he enters his sixth decade in music with a run of records under the Cosmic Temple name and continues to DJ in clubs and festivals worldwide…

Escape Pods ventures into the heart of rural Michigan for a chat with John Shepherd.

You may have come across John over lockdown if you saw the excellent short Netflix film, ‘John was trying to contact Aliens’. If you haven’t seen it we definitely recommend checking it out.

Long story short, and it is a long story indeed spanning over three decades, John learnt how to build powerful high voltage transmitters that could broadcast radio signals into space. He then set up a DJ studio and played music over the rig with the hope that someone out there was listening.
The name for the project was S.T.R.A.T, which stood for Special Telemetry Research and Tracking and the radio shows were broadcast from Earth Station One. John Shepherd had become the world’s first cosmic DJ.

Ok so Escape Pods is now all set up on Spotify now if that's your preferred way to listen to podcasts. Going that way first on the major platforms as you can use Anchor which allows for music being played on podcasts by linking into Spotify plays. Kinda cool as that was a big stumbling block for a Music x Talk show...

Anyway you can now follow Escape Pods and have every episode delivered into your Spotify...
