Vice President Kamala Harris announced Tuesday that the U.S. will start designating “birthing-friendly” hospitals based on the quality of their maternal health care.
“A healthy economy requires healthy mothers and healthy babies,” Harris said during a White House press conference. “That is why today, on behalf of our administration, I am issuing a nationwide call to action to both the public and private sector.”
Harris added that the Biden administration will invest $3 billion in maternal health as part of the Build Back Better Act. Additionally, federal agencies will help states expand postpartum coverage from 60 days to 12 months through Medicaid programs. The White House hopes this effort will reduce the number of medical complications that can arise within a year of giving birth.
