Time is the element that pushes 3D to 4D, creating printed materials that change their shape over time. Their potential is great, but their development is still in the early stages. Still, 4D-printed healthcare applications may be the closest to commercial use. Shape-shifting materials, for instance, could be used for small, implantable medical devices. In this video we take a closer look at how 3D printing is building a foundation for 4D development in biomedical applications.

Article: 4D Printing: The Bio Revolution

4-D printing is taking conventional 3-D printing and adding a time factor into the process. Certain materials that are compatible with biological systems expand, contract, bend, or straighten into calculated shapes when introduced to an external energy stimulus.

Much like motorized and pneumatic actuators, Smart materials use an external trigger or stimulus, such as a voltage, heat, or pressure source, in order to have a resulting deformation change. A couple of reasons these deformations can take place is for either an end movement or a system movement. In an end movement, you will have a part deform throughout the whole material for a resulting purpose.

In a system movement, compliant mechanisms, which are jointless mechanisms that distribute their deformations in order to translate a deformation in one area to a different length deformation in another are used in collaboration with a smart material so that the location-specific material shape-change works as the actuator for a mechanism

4D bioprinting is a new concept that has potential to advance the field of 3D bioprinting further by incorporating the fourth dimension of time. 🕰
The printing technology is the same, but the printed materials are smart and they are preprogrammed to respond to a predefined external stimulus ⚡️by changing their shape.

A team at the Wyss Institute and Harvard SEAS has developed a new microscale printing method to create transformable objects. These "4D-printed" objects go a step beyond 3D printing to incorporate a fourth dimension–time.

The method was inspired by the way plants change shape over time in response to environmental stimuli. This orchid-shaped structure is printed with a hydrogel composite ink containing aligned cellulose fibrils, which enable anisotropic swelling. A proprietary mathematical model developed by the team precisely predicts how the fibrils will swell in water.
