There are certain quintessential design details that have become definitive representations of specific regions of the world – and for many of us, it’s coastal design. With our vast coastlines, pristine beaches and a lifestyle deeply intertwined with our connection to the sea, it's no surprise that coastal aesthetics consistently influence both interior design and architecture in our corner of the world. Often bright and breezy, coastal looks resonate for their ability to evoke feelings of relaxation, openness and a seamless connection to nature, so the style is a natural fit for projects that wish to embrace our favourable climate and abundant natural light with relaxed and practical appeal. For as long as humans have been building and decorating, hues borrowed from nature have been used ubiquitously. Before the advent of modern paints, earth-derived pigments that occurred naturally in our surroundings were understandably the only options available – and many of these hues were subtle and understated due to their high susceptibility to light or water. But despite exciting advancements in paint technology and the wide-spread availability of bolder and more saturated colours, muted earth tones continue to be an appealing option for many clients. Colours like brown, beige, taupe and green are not only versatile, they’re also highly comforting and calming. Unlike bolder trend-driven colours, earthy hues have a classic quality that adapt well to just about any style, from rustic and traditional to sleek and sophisticated contemporary looks. If you have ever found yourself on the fence about whether it’s better to embrace a trend-focused colour palette or opt for a classic look comprised of timeless hues, we have some good news. Thanks to renewed interest in a previously popular design approach, you may no longer need to choose.

Transitional design is a recently coined term that describes spaces which manage to successfully and harmoniously blend traditional elements with contemporary appeal. For those who wish to respect historical context while infusing modern sensibilities into their projects, the rise of this aesthetic movement comes as the ideal solution for updating early 20th century villas, Art Deco-era commercial buildings and the like.

If you have ever found yourself on the fence about whether it’s better to embrace a trend-focused colour palette or opt for a classic look comprised of timeless hues, we have some good news. Thanks to renewed interest in a previously popular design approach, you may no longer need to choose.

In the town of Oamaru, New Zealand, the Oamaru Opera House stands as a testament to the elegance and grandeur of a bygone era. Once a beacon of Victorian opulence, time had taken its toll on this architectural gem. However, a recent project led by interior designer Carolina Izzo, has breathed new life into its faded glory, focusing particularly on the restoration of its iconic dome.
