The Academic Staff Union of Universities has decided that it will not embark on another strike over its salary cut but instead engage in peaceful consultation.

In a statement made available to The PUNCH on Tuesday after the National Executive Council meeting and signed by ASUU’s President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the union said it would continue to pursue a positive resolution of the avoidable crisis within the ambit of legality without compromising the interests and welfare of Nigerian intellectuals.

Some members of the union also confirmed to our correspondent that it would not go on strike for now.

In the statement, Osodeke also appealed for the understanding of Nigerian students, parents, and other genuinely concerned individuals and groups.

The statement partly read, “At an emergency meeting of the ASUU’s National Executive Committee, held on Monday, November 7, 2022, the union deliberated on developments since the suspension of the strike. NEC noted with dismay that paying academics on a “pro-rata” basis, like casual workers, is unprecedented in the history of university-oriented labour relations and therefore condemned this attempt to reduce Nigerian scholars to casual workers in its entirety.”

He added that the NEC commended the membership of ASUU for their perseverance in the face of untold hardship and unwarranted provocation by some notorious agents of the ruling class.

However, investigations by our correspondents showed that ASUU chose to keep mum on the possibility of another because the matter was still in the court.

A source within the NEC of ASUU explained to our correspondent that the union consulted with its legal counsel who encouraged the body to wait for the decision of the court.

“You know the case is still in court, we have not been called back yet. The previous strike was suspended based on court order, if we decide to go on strike, the minister may use that opportunity to say they want to proscribe ASUU. There are lots of court cases on ground already. We need the court to settle it once and for all. Our hands are tied. Only the court can rule. The minister knows this and that is why he is acting this way.”

All branches to meet this week
Due to the half salary crisis that led to the emergency meeting of ASUU-NEC, all branches of the union will be meeting on different days throughout this week to brief their members.

The ASUU Chairman, Obafemi Awolowo University, Dr. Adeola Egbedokun, stated that the ASUU OAU branch would meet on Wednesday for its branch congress to analyse and discuss the resolutions of the NEC meeting.

Similarly, a member of ASUU University of Lagos, Prof. Poju Tejumaiye, told our correspondent that the UNILAG branch would meet on Thursday.

“There won’t be strike action. Everybody is trying to avoid the foolishness of Ngige. We don’t want to play into his hands. We will continue with our lectures while consultation also continues. Because of Gbajabiamila, we will wait for the father of the nation to respond, but I know my people won’t wait endlessly,” he said.

A former Presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, Sam Ohuabunwa, has lashed out at the current Federal Government led by the President, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), over its ineptitude towards the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

This was as the past President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria noted that government attitude towards education signalled doom to the sector, even as the 2023 general election inches closer.

He stated this in a statement, on Wednesday, a copy of which was made available to The PUNCH.

According to him, the authorities were unwittingly prompting ASUU to resume a strike it just called off.

The statement read, “I was pained to note that this out-goung Federal Government has taken deliberate actions to humiliate our university lecturers.

“Every well-meaning Nigerian appealed to ASUU to call off their strike after 8 months even when they felt that their demands had not been met. They eventually complied as requested including obeying the Industrial Court order. That was humiliating enough for them to resume without achieving most (or any) of their demands but they were willing to bend over in response to the cry of parents, students and Nigerian patriots.

“They resumed and were mobilising to do their utmost to recover lost time. They were doing their utmost to rebuild their motivation and then go the extra mile to redeem lost time, now this half salary matter happens to Nigeria’s lecturers. This is terribly disconcerting. We are not even talking of the seven or so months that have not been paid at all. They resumed in October and they were paid pro-rata like casuals or daily paid workers for the month! If this is not utter humiliation, then what can it be!
Indeed, it is more than humiliation.

A former Minister of Transportation and Director-General of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential Campaign Council in Rivers State, Dr. Abiye Sekibo, has demanded a public apology from Governor Nyesom Wike over the latter’s claim that he was given N5.5 billion contracts by the state government.

He described the allegation as an orchestrated attempt to tarnish his image.
Governor Wike had, last Monday, at the inauguration of 319 ward and 32 constituency liaison officers in Port Harcourt , described Sekibo as a self-centered politician who has failed to attract any kind of democratic dividends to Okrika Local Government Area.

He accused Sekibo of turning against him despite receiving N2.1bn Okrika sand-filling contract, N2bn Okochiri internal road contract, and the N1.4bn contract for the Okujaku Street, Danjuma Drive in Trans-Amadi, Port Harcourt, from his administration.

BENUE State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has described the Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, as the finest standard bearer in terms of education, performance, character, and passion to rescue the country.
Ortom is one of the five Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governors seeking the resignation of the party’s National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, as a condition for backing the PDP Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

The other four governors are Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Ifenayi Ugwuanyi (Enugu).
On Tuesday, Obi said he has an understanding with the PDP-5 to rescue and develop the country.

The LP flag bearer is the finest “in terms of education, in terms of character, in terms of performance, in terms of reaching out, in terms of accommodation, in terms of being a pan-Nigerian and in terms of passion to ensure that our country is liberated from where we are from insecurity to security and out of the economic woes to economic vibrancy and out of lack of adequate social life. You have the capacity to make things work,” Ortom told Obi during a visit to Benue.

The Obi-Datti Campaign viewed Ortom’s comment as one of the biggest endorsements and testimonial Obi has received on his journey to A*o Rock.

Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, was in Benue State to meet with the two topmost traditional rulers in the state, the Tor Tiv and Orchi Idom and paid a courtesy call on Governor Ortom who prayed that God who crowns to do it for Obi if it’s His will.

Governor Ortom noted that this is the first time a presidential candidate was meeting their two paramount rulers and commended Obi for his ability to reach out.

The Governor quoted from the Holy book of John 3:23 to buttress the fact that only God crowns, and told Obi: “If Nigerians were given a chance to make a choice, you are one of the finest candidates that we have in this country.”

Ortom, who reiterated his earlier position that political party should not be the consideration in this election, said: “Let me say this again, where we are in our country Nigeria today, we should not be looking at party or where someone comes from but we should be looking at the capacity of the personality that will be able to deliver us from the mess we are in Nigeria today.”

He said that Obi, from his antecedents, has the capacity and commitment to the well being of our people, noting that, “If I were God, but am not one, I would have said…but I am not God but I admire your courage, your capacity to deliver to our people.

“All I can say is that the God that sees the heart let him bless you. The God that blesses and crowns if it’s His will let Him crown you.”

He said that he is a living example of how no man can stop the crown God has destined for somebody. “I am a living example of the fact that God crowns and when He decides to do it nothing can stop it. How I became Governor in 2015 and 2019 is known to all”

The Governor advised Obi to reach out to his colleagues in the presidential race to solicit their support to be their servant if God crowns Him so that you all work together. We need everybody to work together for the good of this country.

Obi commended the Governor for his commitment to his people particularly caring for their security and welfare, and said that his heart bleeds that Nigerians are in IDP camps in a country that is not in any war.

• Ndume: Buhari in order, should be interested in who succeeds him

More flaks trailed President Muhammadu Buhari’s notice to All Progressives Congress (APC) governors of his decision to ‘anoint’ a successor ahead of the party’s National Convention on Monday.

While the APC governors to whom the instruction was handed down are yet to arrive at their choice of a consensus candidate, high-ranking members of the party and senior citizens have berated the President for his comments, which they said could derail the transition process ahead of 2023 general elections.

Speaking yesterday, the National Vice Chairman, Northwest of APC, Dr Salihu Lukman, admonished President Buhari not to fall into the temptation of imposing the presidential candidate of the party.

Lukman in an open letter said it behooves party stakeholders to take a cue from the December 10, 2014 APC National Convention, where aspirants jostling for the exalted seat of the presidency were guaranteed level playing field.

Lukman, who is opposed to the leadership style of the APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, remarked that any recommendation to the contrary would be inimical and injurious to the electoral fortunes of the party.

The Kaduna-born politician urged President Buhari to take the right decisions that would broaden the democratic scope in APC, and continue to endear the party to Nigerians ahead of the 2023 poll.

Recalling the alleged third term agenda of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, which impacted negativity on his image, he warned President Buhari against any transition initiative that risked being unpopular with the electorate.

He noted: “Any initiative that potentially takes away the rights of party members to elect candidates would potentially mobilise Nigerians against the party and rubbish Mr. President. This was the case in 2007, which eventually pushed the PDP into whole-scale rigging such that election results were announced even before counting processes were concluded.

“It was so bad that even late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, who was the main beneficiary had to acknowledge that it was a bad case.

“Notwithstanding, however, there is the overriding requirement to appeal to you to kindly resist the temptation. I would have wished we have enough time for open debate within our party. Unfortunately, as things are, we have less than one week to settle this matter.”

In similar vein, APC stakeholders have called on the leadership of the party to allow a level-playing field for all aspirants.

Speaking under the aegis of APC Rebirth Group, the stakeholders said President Buhari’s desire to reciprocate gestures must not compromise the party’s internal democratic processes.

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, has said that despite calls and recommendations by the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and other global financial institutions, Nigeria cannot afford to operate a floated exchange rate system.

Emefiele made this known at the IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington DC, United States.

He spoke in reaction to a charge by the President of the World Bank Group, David Malpass, for Nigeria to jettison its multiple exchange rate systems and maintain a single exchange rate policy.

Emefiele said that different countries were facing diverse economic challenges and must develop a framework peculiar to their economic situation.
He said, “Both the IMF and World Bank are our prime development banks, and we have received support from them at different times in resolving some of our economic challenges, particularly bordering on finance.”

“Nigeria’s situation is very peculiar and that is why we have continued to engage the IMF and World Bank to show understanding of our local problems.

“Yes, they want us to freely float the exchange rate and you do know that this will have some impact on the exchange rate itself in the sense that when you allow that to happen, you will have some uncontrollable spiral in the country’s exchange rate.”

The Lagos State Government has ordered the reopening of all Chrisland Schools shut down over controversies that surrounded an immoral act engaged in by some students of the school.

This was contained in a press statement by the Lagos State Commissioner of Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, made available to The PUNCH early Saturday morning.

The PUNCH had reported that the state government had shut down all Chrisland Schools in Lagos State on April 18, 2022.

Some pupils from the elite private school located in Victoria Garden City embarked on a trip to Dubai to participate in the World School Games between March 10 and 13, 2022 when the immoral act happened.
Following the incident, the school authorities suspended a female student indefinitely, stating that she was “a major actor” in an “immoral act”.

The government said the school’s Parent Teachers Association would be working on scheduled psychosocial support for the students involved in the immoral act.

The statement read, “The Lagos State Ministry of Education has directed that all Chrisland Schools shut for alleged misconduct of some students in Dubai be reopened from Monday, April 25th, 2022.

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, has passed on.

He was 83 years old.

The top Yoruba monarch died in the late hours of Friday, according to palace officials.

Adeyemi died at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti, The PUNCH was told.
The late Alaafin’s first son, Prince ‘Tunde, and other children had received the monarch’s remains at Idi-Igba, Oyo town early Saturday morning.

Palace sources confirmed that traditional rites had begun without giving details about his burial arrangement yet.

Adeyemi ruled for 52 years before his demise, making him the longest-reigning Alaafin.
By tradition, the head of the Oyomesi, Basorun of Oyo, High Chief Yusuf Ayoola, would take over pending the appointment of a new Alaafin.

Basorun is also expected to brief the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, before an official announcement.

BREAKING: Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, dies at 83

23/04/2022

Former President Goodluck Jonathan will only be joining the All Progressives Congress presidential race on the condition that he is endorsed by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), Saturday PUNCH has learnt.

Anything short of this would not be acceptable to Jonathan who served as deputy governor, governor, Vice-President and President on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party from 1999 and 2015.

Saturday PUNCH had reported in February that some northern emirs had reached out to the former President, asking him to contest. Jonathan had also stayed away from activities of the PDP, including the last national convention.

Former Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State had also stated that it was unlikely that Jonathan was still a member of the PDP as he was no longer involved in the party’s activities.

On Thursday, however, posters of the ex-President flooded the national secretariat of the APC on Blantyre Street, Wuse 2.

On Friday, youth and women groups demonstrated outside of Jonathan’s office in the Maitama area of Abuja.

The demonstrators, who arrived in five large buses, held up placards some of which read, ‘Jonathan, Please Run’, ‘Jonathan, do the needful’, ‘Jonathan for 2023’, ‘Jonathan Declare Now’ and ‘Goodluck Please Come Back, We Love You’.

What's your take on this?

IT has been a long road to the All Progressives Congress, APC, convention, after 22 months of uncertainty and another long night at the historic and symbolic Eagle Square that ended the waiting game.

In the end, the President and the conclave of governors triumphed. The fundamental tenets of democracy – freedom to choose candidates, individual conscience and conviction dictating the choice of candidate, and competition among candidates to demonstrate capacity and abilities for which they will get votes in the quest for positions in the party administration – were all sacrificed for the stability of the party, marked by political horse-trading, high wired intrigues, reign of the oligarchs and permutations. This situation is similar to what transpired at the PDP convention last year.

Unity List surfaced, endorsed by all the governors elected on the party’s platform. The emergence of the Unity List, a product of a behind-the-scene power-sharing arrangement, led all contestants to the party’s chairperson to step down from the contest and support Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the preferred candidate of Mr President for the post.

Unity list is another word for democratic consensus and appears to be one of the Nigerian political class’s innovations offering to democracy. Although accepted as part of democratic practice, Unity List or democratic consensus may become undemocratic depending on its application.

When people at the upper echelons of power orchestrate democratic consensus and force it on party members to deprive them of the opportunity to exercise their democratic freedom to choose the candidate of their choice based on their knowledge and conscience, democratic consensus becomes tyrannical and authoritarian. Its triumph, although expedient, may upend democracy and lead to political apathy.
