The difference here is the choice of their job.

The word “NIGERIA” was first mentioned In Lokoja, Kogi State.

Many Kogi State indigenes and non-indigenes are not aware that the name of our dear country Nigeria was first pronounced in Lokoja, by Miss Flora Shaw, a beautiful British journalist who later became the wife of Lord Lugard.

Sir Fredrick Lugard was a British Imperialist and Governor of Northern and southern Protectorates of Nigeria as at then.

Flora Shaw decided to name the country NIGERA while observing the beauty of the greatest river in Nigeria, the river Niger from the top of Mount Patti.

10/07/2022

Sri Lankan protesters refused to budge from President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s residence on Sunday after storming his home, forcing him to flee with the navy and to announce his resignation.

The dramatic events on Saturday were the culmination of months of protests by people enraged by the South Asian island nation’s unprecedented economic crisis and the Rajapaksa clan’s incompetence and corruption.

Hundreds of thousands massed in Colombo demanding Rajapaksa take responsibility for shortages of medicines, food and fuel that have brought the once-relatively rich economy to its knees and caused misery for ordinary people.

After storming the gates of the colonial-era presidential palace, protesters lounged in its opulent rooms, somersaulting into the compound’s pool and going through Rajapaksa’s clothes.

Troops fired in the air to help Rajapaksa escape on Saturday. He then boarded a naval craft which steamed away from the island to the safety of the island’s southern waters.

From there the 73-year-old, who had clung to power even after deadly nationwide violence in May forced his brother Mahinda Rajapaksa to quit as prime minister, decided finally to throw in the towel.

“To ensure a peaceful transition, the president said he will step down on July 13,” parliamentary speaker Mahinda Abeywardana said in a televised statement.

Rajapaksa’s nearby seafront office also fell into protesters’ hands while others set fire to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s residence even after he too offered to resign. The premier was not there at the time.

Footage on social media showed a crowd cheering the blaze, which broke out shortly after a security detachment guarding Wickremesinghe attacked several journalists outside the home.

Security forces attempted to disperse the huge crowds that had mobbed Colombo’s administrative district earlier in the day, triggering clashes.

An audience with his Majesty Oba Ovonramwem Nogbaisi before he joined his ancestors.

Interview notes

Q: Thank you for having us today. Your Majesty how are you feeling?

A: Very frail from my illness.

Q: Your Majesty, it is exactly 17 years to the day today that the British put together a naval squadron of 1200 Royal marines to capture Your Majesty and burn down your city. We apologise for their cruelty but we would just like to get your views on what happened and on life for you after that punitive expedition.

Q: The British claimed that they were acting in response to your soldiers eliminating a peaceful party they had sent to bring you presents at Christmas, what would you like to say in response to that?

A: What is Christmas? My people had no idea about Christmas, we had our sacred ancestral ceremony during that period (the Igue Festival) and the British Party led by Lawyer Phillips knew that and was told to wait for just two days for me to complete my fasting but he said he was too big and too busy to wait for us to complete our ceremonies. He decided to invade our private ceremonies during my fasting and prayer period and when no one was allowed to talk to or disturb me; putting together a party of over 270 officials and soldiers , he set out to march on our city against all advice that this was an unwise move. My Chief of Army Staff saw this as a deliberate act of unprovoked war declaration and acted accordingly to defend our city. What would you have done if you had been in his position?

News International 101: We are very sorry, Your Majesty. We will move on to another question.

Q: The British reported that you were the last person to evacuate your city when it was being burnt to the ground; it must have been very painful for you to watch centuries of your ancestors’ hard work burnt to cinders. Why did you wait till the bitter end?

A: You just imagine this, I had recently in the new year, blessed all my peoples’ households and prayed for their prosperity this year; then one month on, the city is burning and I flee with the people, how would that have made us look as Divine King of the people? My duty was to watch over their houses and the city until there was nothing left, my ancestors would have expected this of us.

Q: The papers reported widely about the treasure trove in your storerooms, the British reported finding intricate bronze plaques, ivory and terracotta artwork ‘of the highest quality covered in the dust of age’. What was the idea behind this?
A: We were renovating the palace and put these away for safe keeping. I must add that most of the works the British found there had been in the storerooms for centuries; my ancestors wanted to record and preserve their history in expensive and durable forms, it is one’s duty to uphold this desire.

Q: Your Majesty, you now live in Calabar, how have things been with you?

A: Traumatic. Losing one’s place in the world is never easy. Having to cope with being a nobody after being a king in charge of a proud and industrious people and of a country is very humiliating but one has to do all one can to survive, even a once upon a time king like me. One lesson we made sure we taught our people was; ‘when the going gets tough, the tough must get going’; this mindset sets superior stock apart from ordinary stock and I am made of a superior stock, this trying period attests to this fact.

Q: Has it been difficult adjusting to your new position?

A: You have no idea just how difficult it has been. Some people deliberately scorn you with impunity for the sake of just being able to do so.

Q: What one incident stands out for you?

A: One day, one of my children was playing with other children, one of them deliberately head butted her, injuring her badly. She suffered a fractured jaw and eye inflammation and was in pain for months. When her mother complained to the local chiefs here, all they did was to ask that child to apologise whereas in my custom back home, the child’s parents would have been fined heavily for not having their child under control. It was painful for me as a father knowing that I cannot even protect my own family when others want to deliberately hurt or harm them.

Q: What would you like to say to the British?

A: I have this message for the British; congratulations, now that you have opened up your trade routes on our soil, but make no mistake about this; this is not the end of the Kingdom of Benin.

Q: Your Majesty, thinking back about it all, is there anything that you would have done differently?

A: NO. I was trained from an early age to defend my people’s interests and to safeguard our history. I performed that duty to the best of my ability even in the face of bribery with presents from British officials to abandon my people and to pursue my own riches. My ancestors would have turned in their graves if we had behaved any differently. Anyhow, history will be the judge of whether we should have done anything differently.

Q: Your Majesty, have you any final words?

A: Yes, tell all peoples everywhere in the world, that whenever they come across a Benin artwork, they should look deeply at the composition and use the narrative it tells to pass on the history of a great Rain-forest Kingdom that existed on the West African Coast from 40BC till the British sacked it in 1897. The world should tell our story well.

News International 101: Your Majesty, thank you for giving us so much of your time today. We hope you get better soon so you can leave the hospital and return home.

End of interview.

News International 101, received news the following day that his Majesty passed away in hospital; he never recovered from his illness and never returned home.

His Majesty Ovonramwen Nogbaisi died on Wednesday 14th January 1914.

Tuesday 14th January 2022, marked his 108 years death anniversary.

His Majesty Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi was never informed that his captor and judge Ralph Moor who put him in chains and exiled him from his kingdom, on return to England after his African duties suffered insanity and committed su***de on September 14th 1909; 'The coroner's jury determined that "the poison was deliberately taken whilst temporarily insane after suffering acutely from insomnia", they had heard evidence that Moor had suffered for the last four years on his return from Africa with malarial and backwater fever that induced insomnia.'

AN ADDRESS BY HIS ROYAL MAJESTY, OMO N’OBA N’EDO, UKU AKPOLOKPOLO, EWUARE II, OBA OF BENIN, ON THE OCCASION OF THE APPRECIATION VISIT TO HIS EXCELLENCY, MUHAMMADU BUHARI, (GCFR), PRESIDENT AND COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE ARMED FORCES OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA. ON FRIDAY, THE 29TH OF APRIL, 2022 AT THE PRESIDENTIAL VILLA, ABUJA, FOLLOWING THE REPATRIATION OF TWO BENIN ARTEFACTS
PROTOCOLS:
His Excellency,
Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR,
President and Commander-In-Chief Of The Armed Forces Of The Federal Republic Of Nigeria
1. First of all, we must thank the Almighty God and our ancestors for making this thank-you visit to our dear President possible today, after previous attempts proved unsuccessful, due to Your Excellency’s very busy schedule. As they say God’s time is the best. Mr. President, for finding time to receive us now despite your very tight schedule, we say thank you immensely.

2. Mr. President, sir I bring warm greetings from the Benin Royal Family, the Benin Traditional Institution and the good people of Edo State within Nigeria and in the diaspora.

3. I am here with some members of the Royal Court of Benin and of the Board of Trustee of the Benin Royal Museum, to thank Your Excellency for your kind intervention as it relates to the issues that bothers on the return of Benin Bronzes and artefacts to its original place of abode.

4. Mr. President will recall that in June 2021, I paid a private visit to Your Excellency to express concerns about the imminent return of Benin artefacts from Europe and other parts of the world. Your Excellency’s response to my concerns then was incisive, supportive and very encouraging.

5. Later, precisely on the 19th, of February, 2022, two famous Benin bronzes were returned to the Nigerian Government by Jesus College, University of Cambridge and the University of Aberdeen in the United Kingdom. These famous bronzes were officially handed over to me as the custodian of Benin customs and tradition, in line with Your Excellency’s directive to His Excellency Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Ishola, the Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. We deeply appreciate this presidential directive to the Nigerian ambassador to the United Kingdom, to personally hand over the bronzes to me. I wish to commend the efforts of Ambassador Ishola, ably supported by the Director General, National Commission for Museum and Monuments (NCMM), for diligently carrying out that presidential directive with a high sense of diplomacy and, professionalism. The physical handing over ceremony was quite an emotional one for us.

6. To further show Your Excellency’s support and commitment to the return of these precious artefacts, the Federal Government issued a Press Statement shortly after the physical handover ceremony, which clearly indicate, that all Benin artefacts outside the country Nigeria are subject to repossession by the Federal Government of Nigeria and that all such artefacts should be returned to the respective custodian of the custom and traditional institutions where those artefacts originally belonged and were indeed taken from during the pre-colonial era. Mr. President I dare say that these artefacts, particularly Benin Bronzes and other Benin artefacts, may be likened to the Crown Jewels of the British Monarchy. Nobody could suddenly wake up and attempt to lay claim to their ownership, assuming if they were ever, to be successfully taken away by the Romans, who ruled over them at some point in history and, thereafter wished to return them to Britain.

7. I am pleased to inform Your Excellency that shortly after the State House press release; I received a letter from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, United States of America, clearly in line with the position of Federal Government of Nigeria, confirming the ownership of these artefacts. In the letter it was specifically and unequivocally stated inter Alia that “ WE RECOGNIZE THAT YOUR GREAT GRAND FATHER OBA OVORANMWEN AND THE BENIN KINGDOM ARE THE CULTURAL AND SPIRITUAL OWNERS OF THESE TRADITIONAL ARTIFACTS.’’

8. In the same vein the Brazilian Consulate in Nigeria also wrote a letter recently to me to further buttress the fact that, the Royal Court of Benin Kingdom existed as a SOVEREIGN AUTHORITY long before 1897, when the Benin bronzes and other Benin artefacts were forcibly removed to Britain and auctioned out to art collectors from around the world. This fact is captured in a statement in the letter which stated inter Alia that “…. It is in the historical record, your ancestral lineage is among the first to recognize the independence of Brazil in 1822.” With the coming into existence of Nigeria upon independence the Federal Government is now the only sovereign authority that can deal with other sovereign authorities based on international law and treaties regarding matters of repatriation of artefacts to Nigeria.

9. Your Excellency, I have always used every available opportunity to pursue the return of our artefacts scattered all over the world even before my ascension to the throne as the Oba of Benin. I recall with fond memories that during my undergraduate years in the United Kingdom, I was first spurred by the information, I received, that many of our bronzes and artefacts were housed in the British Museum. When I later crossed to the United States for my Masters and post graduate training at the United Nations Headquarters, in New York, I was further exposed to the presence of our artefacts in that Country and in Europe and, indeed all over the globe. Thereafter when I got posted to some of these European Countries as an Ambassador, I did not hesitate in expressing our desire to have our artefacts returned, to be used for the setting up of our Museum now to be known as – The Benin Royal Museum. This is a journey that started since 1977!

10. Mr. President, We did not relent in spite of our recent challenges and with Your Excellency’s kind Presidential intervention; justice is now being seen to be done. We are now seeing the results of the hard work of my grandfather HRM. OBA AKENZUA II, my father HRM. OBA EREDIAUWA, and now myself, who has been doing my best in building on the legacies of my great forefathers’, Today I am happy to be here with my people to thank Your Excellency immensely for helping us to set the records straight.

11. Today I am also proud to be here with members of the Board of Trustee of the Benin Royal Museum supported by the Royal Court of Benin, to say a big thank you for this kind gesture which set the stage for the smooth return of the two Benin bronzes that now heralds the eventual return of all Benin bronzes and other Artefacts back into our possession albeit under the framework of collaboration between the Royal Court of Benin and the National Commission for Museum and Monuments. May I at this juncture commend the efforts of the incumbent Director General, of NCMM Prof. Abba Isa Tijani, who is not only collaborating closely with the Royal Court of Benin, all this while, but has also further repositioned and brought to the fore, the relevance of the NCMM under the Ministry of Information and Culture.

12. The joy of my people at home and in the diaspora knows no bound on the return of the two bronzes and the eventual return of all our artefacts. Again we say Thank You, Your Excellency.

13. May I at this point inform Mr. President that we have concluded plans with the National Commission for Museum and Monuments to establish an ultramodern international standard Benin Royal Museum to house these Benin Bronzes and other artefacts for the purpose of preserving our history, tourism and education. The Benin Royal Museum will be open to the general public for viewing and researchers alike.

14. The Board of Trustees is made up of eminent Nigerians, some of whom are here with me today. May I crave the indulgence of Your Excellency to introduce them, please. They are:

15. I hereby reassure all Nigerians that the Benin bronzes and artefacts, represents Nigeria’s cultural heritage in particular and Africa in general. We therefore hold these objects in trust as the original owners in conjunction with National Commission for Museum and Monuments (NCMM) for the benefit of all. We want to reassure Mr. President that the Royal Court of Benin and National Commission for Museum and Monuments are working closely to ensure the safe custody, preservation and enhancement of these Benin bronzes and artefacts not only for their cultural and economic benefits, but more particularly towards the promotion of the tourism industry in Nigeria.

16. Your Excellency, I will also like to use this opportunity to express gratitude for my recent appointment as Chancellor of Bayero University Kano (BUK). This appointment gives me the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of my father and grandfather who also served as Chancellors of very prominent Universities in Nigeria. I thank Your Excellency for giving me the opportunity to contribute my quota to the development of the Educational sector of this great country, Mr. President I will do my best to justify the confidence reposed in me by this appointment.

17. Finally, Your Excellency let me once again express my appreciation for finding time out of your ever-busy schedule to receive me and my entourage. I pray that Almighty God and our ancestors will continue to guide and protect you and your family in piloting the affairs of our dear country, Nigeria. We cannot end this address without commending Mr. President’s efforts in the way Your Excellency has handled the country’s affairs now that the elections are close and Presidential aspirants are showing up everywhere in preparation for the beginning of another administration. We believe Your Excellency has tried in the issue of security which in our country is not an easy one. We pray to Almighty God to give us another President which will build upon your legacy.

18. God bless Your Excellency, God Bless Your entire household.
God bless Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Thank you again Mr. President.
