Napoleon Bonaparte remains one of the worlds most renowned military strategist, tactician, and leaders of men. His genius shifted the landscape of war in a way the world has rarely seen before.

‘Maxims of War’ is Napoleon’s military strategy masterpiece. It was intended as a guidebook for Napoleon’s officers and generals. The work remains a vital spotlight on the art of war during the Napoleonic Era and a valuable treatise on effective leadership and management on and off the battlefield.

Napoleon’s ambitions were finally ended by the combined forces of ‘Wellington’s Army’ and the Prussia forces at the Battle of Waterloo.

But his empire had reached it’s high water mark a few years before with his disastrous campaigns in Russia and the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal). Napoleon himself referred to the British/Portuguese campaign and Spanish guerrilla warfare as his ‘Spanish Ulcer’, which ultimately bled his empire of manpower and treasure.

‘Adventures of a Soldier’, and ‘Recollections of Rifleman Harris’ are excellent first hand accounts of British Soldiers who fought under General Moore and Wellington in the Peninsula Campaign. Anyone who’s read Bernard Cornwell’s brilliant Richard Sharpe series (or watched the tv series) will be immediately entertained.

Ultimately British military supremacy was made possible through their overwhelming Sea Power, which deprived Napoleonic France of its overseas colonies and much needed resources. The Royal Navy won a decisive victory at the Battle of Trafalgar, under the leadership of Lord Nelson in 1805.

While it took another 10 years to wrest Napoleon from the throne of France, naval supremacy and control of maritime trade enabled Great Britain to create the largest empire ever known to mankind. Controlling over 25 percent of Earth’s land mass the British Empire has yet to be surpassed in size.

Rule Britannia.
