British nurse Edith Cavell was shot in 1915. When WW1 broke out she returned to Brussels and turned her clinic into a Red Cross hospital for wounded soldiers from all armies. Cavell helped hundreds of soldiers escape the Germans, but was arrested and given the death penalty. She is commemorated near Trafalgar Square and in Shoreditch.
