- You can get USB (plugs right into your computer) or XLR (needs additional cables but the audio quality is much higher)⠀
- If you are just starting out and don't want to break the bank, I would suggest Blue Yeti USB microphone. If you are a bit more serious, consider the Shure SM7B, a great microphone used by many content creators today. There are many options online for quality microphones⠀

Microphone Stand: ⠀
- You are going to need something to attach your microphone to⠀
- Adjustable desk stands are great, and I would also suggest a boom arm that attaches to your desk and is easily adjustable ⠀
⠀
Pop Filter: ⠀
- This is an accessory to your microphone, and usually attaches to the microphone stand. A pop filter reduces the amount of unwanted sound such as plosives (P's, B's, etc) and will cut down on any mouth sounds you might make ⠀
⠀
Audio Interface:⠀
- An interface will improve the recordings capabilities of your computer ⠀
- Using an XLR microphone with an audio interface will greatly improve quality ⠀
⠀
DAW - Digital Audio Workstation⠀
- This is the program you use to record⠀
- If you are starting out I would recommend Audacity, its free and easy to use!⠀
- My preferred DAW is Adobe Audition. It is user friendly and compatible with other Adobe programs ⠀

Lighting: ⠀
- A ring light will greatly improve video quality, even if your camera isn't the greatest⠀
- They come in all shapes and sizes, and some even have adjustable brightness and colour ⠀

Microphones have become a hot commodity as more and more people transition to at-home learning and work. With the sudden exposure to a variety of technology, it can often become overwhelming and confusing. Here is a simple pros/cons list for the very popular USB Microphone!
Pros
1) Cost effective
- USB Microphones range anywhere from $30-$350 (I do NOT recommend buying a $30 microphone...)
- If you are looking for a simple setup to improve your audio quality, look no further than a USB microphone
2) No additional gear
- USB microphones are "plug-and-play" technology, meaning you simply plug it into your device and you are all set to go!
- These microphones come with a cable and stand, and you won't have to buy any extra technology like an audio interface, cable, etc.
3) Perfect for beginners
- Easy to use, quick setup, no confusing buttons or settings
- A noticable upgrade from the built in mic on your laptop or phone
Cons
1) Not ideal for music
- To put it simply, most USB microphones are unable to capture the wide array of sounds, freqencies, and timbres of instruments and voices (sung vocals, specifically). You can use this microphone for music, but there will be a considerable degradation in sound quality. The exception here is the BLUE YETI PRO USB MIC - link below.
2) Poor sound quality
- There are a few reasons for this, but essentially it is because the USB cable is smaller, and a laptop's audio processor doesn't compare to an external one
- Some USB mics don't have a gain k**b, meaning you can't quickly change the sensitivity of the microphone
3) Can't record with multiple microphones
- You're basically limited to one microphone if you go with USB, and its because your computer will have trouble discerning which microphone is which
Verdict: It all depends on your needs. If you want to upgrade your current set up for online meetings without breaking the bank, USB microphones are the way to go. If you are someone looking to do recordings, do music lessons, or to greatly improve your audio quality for online meetings, I would recommend an XLR microphone (stay tuned for a post on this). There are hundreds of microphones to choose from, many of which will greatly improve your audio quality.
