The Northport Historical Society is inviting community members to honor the “love month” of February with the opening reception for its Still in Love exhibit, a collection inspired by an upcoming documentary film from Northport High School graduate, filmmaker, photographer and visual artist Storm Choi and produced by fellow Northport High School alumnus Fred Beteille.

The Still in Love opening exhibit reception will take place on Friday, February 7 at 6pm, at the Northport Historical Society (215 Main Street, Northport). This exclusive sneak peek of the upcoming documentary film will explore the Still in Love street art, as well as items from the museum’s collection that highlight love in all its forms. Both Choi and Beteille will be present, and guests will be invited to leave their own mark on Northport history by signing their name to a Valentine for Northport that will be added to the museum’s collection. Northport High School senior Dora Fields has been named a semifinalist and Top 300 Scholar in the 2024 Regeneron Science Talent Search, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science research competition for high school students.

The competition, sponsored by Regeneron and the Society for Science, received nearly 2,500 entries from 795 high schools across 48 states in the U.S. and 14 other countries.

Each of the Top 300 Scholars receives a $2,000 award, with an additional $2,000 granted to their school to support science and research programs. From this elite group, 40 finalists will be announced on January 23 and invited to compete for more than $1.8 million in awards during a weeklong competition in Washington, D.C. this March.

When Andrew Reid began building the Misfit Island Spectacular, a remarkable holiday display at his East Northport home, he had his eye on one prize: to raise as much money as possible for the first Ronald McDonald House in Suffolk County, at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.

Yesterday, representatives from the Ronald McDonald Foundation received a boost from Reid’s $16,000 donation, a fundraising total that far exceeded Reid’s expectations. News of the holiday display – which included over 90,000 lights and was built almost entirely from found and refurbished decorations – went viral last month, with coverage ranging from local news publications to cable news networks and even People.com (the online version of People Magazine).

Raio began sailing just five years ago as part of Sea Scout Ship 270, the Northport unit of a century-old organization with other units – or ships – established on oceans, bays, rivers and lakes across the country. The Northport unit was created in 2017 as a way for young men and women, aged 14 to 20, to grow with fellow shipmates, learn water safety and boating skills, and share outdoor, social and service experiences.

A new Maritime Explorers Club serving children ages 11 through 13 has also been announced: Explorer Clubs are part of the Learning for Life corporation, an affiliate of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA).

A sailing program that supports youth during a formative time in their lives while providing the space to make friends, develop leadership skills and have fun on the water, was celebrated at a Landship Ceremony last Thursday, January 9 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Northport.

UPDATE: NEN board of education votes to opt out of regionalization

The Northport-East Northport board of education voted at its meeting last night to opt out of New York State’s regionalization plan, one month after state education officials announced that participation in the plan would be voluntary. The deadline for districts to opt out is January 15, 2025.

After the board’s 5-1 vote in favor of not participating in the regionalization plan, a resolution finalizing the district’s decision to opt out of the entirety of the regionalization process was read, indicating that the district “strongly opposes any initiative that jeopardizes local control of our schools, or redistributes taxpayer dollars and resources to other jurisdictions”; and the “preservation, protection and maintenance of complete and total local control of all School District operations is of paramount importance to the Board of Education and Administration, and in the best interests of the Northport-East Northport School community, our students and our schools.”

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dave Moyer will now provide written notification of the board’s decision to the state. Paperwork previously submitted as part of the state’s Strengths & Needs Tool data will be unsubmitted.

At the upcoming January 9 Northport-East Northport Union Free School District Board of Education meeting, the board is expected to discuss and decide on whether or not to opt out of participating in the New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Regionalization Initiative.

Word of McCready’s death has trickled through the community, with many paying tribute to her kind and caring nature, to both humans and their pets. McCready had garnered a loyal following since opening Hair of the Dog on Church Street in March of 2015; clients described her as being patient, attentive and compassionate with a skill for taking care of older, timid pets and those with special needs.

News of the death of a popular business owner continues to circulate in the neighborhoods she served, as clients share their shock and devastation at the loss of the local pet groomer.

A public hearing on the 2025-26 Northport Village budget will take place tonight at 6pm in Village Hall. The proposed budget calls for a property tax rate increase of 1.99% and, if approved, would result in a $60.40 tax bill increase for the average home assessed at $4,000.

At the upcoming January 9 Northport-East Northport Union Free School District Board of Education meeting, the board is expected to discuss and decide on whether or not to opt out of participating in the New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Regionalization Initiative.

Last month, NYSED made edits to the initial Regionalization Initiative, allowing local school districts to opt out of the process by submitting written notification to the commissioner by January 15, 2025. To date, several Suffolk school districts have opted out, including nearby Commack and Elwood districts.

Congrats to Northport Village Police Sergeant Matthew Bruckenthal and his wife Samantha on the birth of their son, Charlie, the first baby to be born at Stony Brook University Hospital this new year.

East Northport residents Samantha and Matthew Bruckenthal welcomed their son Charlie to the world on New Year’s Day. He is the first baby born at Stony Brook University Hospital in 2025.

In its continuing efforts to bring mental health issues – including anxiety and depression – to light, the Northport-East Northport Drug and Alcohol Task Force (NENDATF) is hosting its second annual program, this year called “New Year, New Mind, New Start,” tomorrow, December 28. The free event is open to the public and will include speakers and musicians meant to inspire hope and resilience leading into the new year.

Two menorah lightings will celebrate the Festival of Lights this year, one in Northport Village this evening and another in Huntington on Monday.

Join Rabbi Walvick and fellow congregants and friends at the East Northport Jewish Center annual community candle lighting for song, prayer and the lighting of the menorah. The event begins at 7pm at the entrance to Northport Harbor, at Woodbine and Main Street.

The town of Huntington’s annual menorah lighting will take place on Monday, December 30, at 5pm in the “Huntington Holiday Spectacular” at Wall and Main Street.

Two menorah lightings will celebrate the Jewish Festival of Lights this year, one in Northport Village this evening and another in Huntington on Monday.

At the December 12 meeting of the Northport-East Northport Union Free School District Board of Education, the board approved several administrative staffing changes in alignment with a two-phase reorganization plan presented by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dave Moyer. The plan’s first phase decreases the number of administrative positions in the district by two, effective July 1, 2025. In phase two, the proposed administrative reorganization plan will result in a reduction of two additional administrative positions by the 2027-2028 school year.
