A summary’s job is to convince potential readers to give your story a shot. Unless you have a gaggle of adoring fans who devour everything you write, your story’s summary is the only thing that will make people want to read your fic. No matter how unique your story is, the synopsis is the gateway, and it has to be just as good as—if not better than—what’s beyond....

Q How to show not tell? I keep getting told this, but I don’t know how to use it in my writing. A Telling is what you do when you inform your friends of something that happened to you (I went here and did that. Then something happened, and I felt a certain way about it). You’re sharing the knowledge of the experience without letting your friends experience it through your retelling....

Q FFNet does not always create a friendly reading atmosphere for italics or bold text. When transitioning to a different perspective or a flashback, what are some alternatives, and what are some tips you can give for using them effectively? A It isn’t just on fanfiction.net that you want to avoid writing whole paragraphs in italics or bold text. Editors working on soon-to-be-published manuscripts will change those paragraphs to a non-italic, non-bold font to make them easier to read....

Writing great reviews takes a surprising amount of effort. It’s easy to say “Great job” or “I loved this story”, but those reviews aren’t helpful to the author. Saying how amazing a story is or how much you liked it is definitely encouraging, but if you want to help the writer improve (and convince them to review one of your stories in return), you need to read their story with a critical mind....

No matter the reason you started writing or how long ago you began, you probably get a little thrill every time someone favourites, follows, and/or reviews one of your stories. Everyone wants to feel appreciated, and fanfiction writers are no different. The trouble arises when those much anticipated and appreciated views and reviews don’t come.
