Laminitis is a painful inflammatory disease that occurs when the “finger-like” projections of the lamellar layer become weakened by losing their normal shape, which results in instability of the pedal bone within the foot.

“Laminitis in the hoof is a symptom of a much bigger health picture that is going on inside the horse. The problem starts from within the lower intestine and can be set off for a number of reasons. Many common factors include high fructan, sugar, carb levels grain overload, medication, vaccines, or any substance that's not natural for a horse. Of course there are other factors but commonly an overload of substances of an unnatural kind are the biggest factor.”
Other causes may include, but not limited to:
Sudden “pig outs” on lush grass
Septic infections
Complications after surgery
Retained placenta
Overcompensating/Excessive weight bearing
Underlying metabolic condition
Excess grain/Abrupt diet changes
Overweight
High fever/Illness
Sever colic
Riding on concrete/hard surfaces
Common signs may include, but not limited to:
Strong pulses felt at the back of the fetlock
Reluctance to walk forward
Difficulty turning
Excessive heat in the hooves
Weight shifting
Hesitant gate/Hesitant moving out
Front feet stretched forward, hind underneath
Hoof rings
Bruised soles
