In the last episode, we went through how Vereeniging was founded and how the South African war ended with a peace treaty that excluded black people and their enfranchisement.

In episode 2, we want to find out where the black people were during that time and the roots of the activism in this region that had an effect on the trajectory of the political struggle of South Africa.

We are joined by HRH Thabo Makobe and Jabulani Oliphant who both give very insightful accounts of the history of Vereeniging and the Vaal in general.

South African War Peace Treaty

1. All Boer fighters of both republics had to give themselves up.
2. All combatants would be disarmed.
3. Everyone had to swear allegiance to the Crown.
4. No death penalties would be dealt out.
5. A general amnesty would apply.
6. The use of Dutch would be allowed in the schools and law courts.
7. To eventually give the Transvaal and the Orange Free State self-government (civil government was granted in 1906 and 1907, respectively)[3]
8. To avoid discussing the native (Black) enfranchisement issue until self-government had been given.
9. To pay the Boers £3,000,000 in reconstruction aid

Ep1- Where we come from Part 1
Established in 1892, Vereeniging has such a rich history that carved it to be what it is today.

We felt it necessary that we take it all the way to the beginning of the beginning.

Special thanks to Mr Sarel and Jeanine Feldtmann who were so gracious in helping me put this information together.

Finally...

Welcome to Yearning for Change Podcast

This is a people-centered podcast series that will be covering the elections in the Emfuleni Municipality from the perspective of the people.

Often during this time, mainstream media focusses on the political parties which is obviously is important however no one really asks the people what they want.

And this is mainly the point of this podcast.

Another thing that we want to to do is to educate people, mainly young voters on their political freedom and how they can fully participate in the politics of the day even without being members of political parties.

Our right to vote was one that was a hard won, one that we need to exercise to ensure we see the change we have so long yearned for.
