GUNS ARE DANGEROUS ≠ CARS ARE DANGEROUS
The issue of gun control is often compared to car regulation, but there are fundamental differences that need to be considered. Both guns and cars can be dangerous, but addressing safety issues through education, regulation, oversight, and personal accountability can help. Trevor Burrus agrees, in the Forbes article, cars are more heavily regulated and more extensively used without causing harm. While car accidents are often accidental or mechanical, gun violence tends to be intentional. However, similar to cars, many gun problems can be minimized with regulations and safety measures.
Homicides by fi****ms are more than 25 times as common as homicides by motor vehicle, making the need for gun control measures crucial. FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, there were 6,283 homicides by fi****ms and 234 homicides by motor vehicle in 2019. Unfortunately, the significant opposition to gun control in the United States has made it difficult to implement widespread regulations and safety measures. While most vehicle deaths are caused by accidents, the main cause of gun-related deaths is inaction from lawmakers, conspiring relationships, and personal benefits.
Implementing smarter regulations, similar to those in place for cars, could be a more productive approach to reducing gun violence. Burrus suggests a licensing system that requires training, background checks, and regular renewal, similar to a driver's license. Gun owners could also be required to carry liability insurance, similar to car owners, to compensate victims in the event of an accident or intentional harm.
By promoting education, oversight, and accountability, we can work towards reducing gun violence and promoting public safety. Burrus argues cars and guns are dangerous, but try to license and regulate guns much like we do cars, it get closer to a workable solution to address gun violence. Rather than banning guns altogether, let's implement similar laws as cars and have a dialogue about solutions.
No one is going to talk about banning cars anytime soon. So, why not implement similar gun laws? Why not? Let's talk. Let's get smart on the data. Let's listen to each other. And let's take action. We can solve this.

If gun-control advocates could better understand the gun/car comparison, then perhaps more productive conversations can happen—or at least less hateful. A more productive conversation about guns would look to the conditions that help create fatalities rather than just focusing on the object itself...
