Hey Rule Breaker$!

Black Businesses Matter! ✊🏾

Our mission is centered around closing the racial wealth gap. Last February, released a report showing that the average net worth of whites families ($171,000) is nearly 10x that of black families ($17,150). 🤯

One way to help close the wealth gap is by supporting black business. Here are a few reasons why:

👷🏾‍♂️Creates more jobs within the community
🏘 Increased property ownership builds the community
💰 Creates the opportunity to build generational wealth

I challenge each of you to support 3 black businesses this month. Drop the name of your favorite black business to support in the comments! 💸💸

Hey Rule Breaker$! 💸

💎💎We’re back with more financial gems from the past. We all know Dr. King for his work in the civil rights movement, but he was also an advocate for financial independence. ✊🏾✊🏾

One of the keys to becoming financially independent is living within your means. In this message, Dr. King shared that your automobile should not cost more than 1/2 of your annual income. 💵💵

However, I tend to agree more with the folks at , and challenge that rule. Your car payment should not be more than 10% of your take home pay, and you should budget 5% more for car related expenses (gas, insurance, maintenance, etc.). 🚘🚘

What do you think, Rule Breaker$? How much are you comfortable spending on your car? Leave feedback in the comments! 💸💸

Hey Rule Breaker$!

Did you know you could negotiate many of your monthly payments? Things like telephone, internet, electricity, insurance, even rent are all negotiable! What’s more is that we’re in a pandemic, so companies are more willing to work with you than ever before. Take advantage!

Some tips for negotiating are:

🗣Ask. Closed mouths don’t get fed! If you think that the company is able to a lower rate, chances are that they can! Phrases like “Is this the best you can do?”, “What can you do for $X price?” (note - take this price down 15-20% to account for a counteroffer), and “Is this the best deal available?” Are all ways to get a lower rate you’d like.
Price Match. When I was in the process of renegotiating my cable package, one of the first things I did was reach out to the other provider in my network to see what they had to offer. I was able to find a package about $80 less than my current company wanted to charge and presented it to them. Sometimes the provider will be willing to match the price or offer a comparable package with a similar rate.

📺 Ask for perks. Using the same example with my cable provider, I was told that unfortunately, they could not match my price so I asked what else they could provide. Sometimes companies will be willing to throw in a free router, modem, cable package, etc. However, you won’t know until you ask!

🚶🏽‍♀️Be prepared to walk away. Finally, when negotiating, you must be prepared to walk away. Finishing up my example with my cable company, I was able to find a package $80 less than what I was paying with a new company. My existing company wasn’t willing to negotiate, so I canceled my service and went to the new company. Funny enough, two days after my new service provider installed my cable, my former company called to offer rates that matched what I originally asked for, but they were, unfortunately, a little late.

The moral of the story - save your coins and negotiate ALL the things! 💰💰

Do you have any additional tips for negotiating rates? Leave them in the comments! 💡💡

Hey Rule Breaker$!

Last week, we asked you to put all of your payment due dates on a calendar and ASK FOR A NEW DUE DATE! Today we’re providing you with an alternative to that.

Depending on your bank and employer, you can request that your paycheck be released a day or two early.

Now, don’t call your bank and yell “RUN ME MY CHECK”, lol. Simply ask them what options are to have your check released into your account early.

Today, we celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In Harry Belafonte’s 2011 memoir, “My Song”, Belafonte recalled an exchange between Dr. King, Jr. and Ambassador Andrew Young, where Dr. King stated, “The trouble is that we live in a failed system. Capitalism does not permit an even flow of economic resources.

“With this system, a small privileged few are rich beyond conscience and almost all others are doomed to be poor at some level. That’s the way the system works. And since we know that the system will not change the rules, we’re going to have to change the system.”

Helping people understand the importance of financial literacy was very important to Dr. King. We founded Breaking Rule$ in that same spirit - to be a guide that helps you change the financial system in your favor. Our goal is to encourage financial independence and close the racial wealth gap.

Hey Rule Breaker$!

On Monday, we asked you to pull your credit and bank statements for the past three months to analyze your spending habits. Today, we want you to review those statements and determine what your due dates are for all of your bills. You can mark those dates on a paper calendar, the calendar on your phone, or the one we’ve provided for you in our story.🗓

Once you’ve mapped out your upcoming payment dates, you’ll be able to see if some of your bills are due at the same time. If they are, ASK FOR A NEW DUE DATE! Now, you can’t do this with all of your bills, but most credit cards, utilities, and insurance companies can reschedule your due date.

No need to pay for everything the 1st week. Spread out your due dates so that you aren’t always playing catch up. 🏃🏾‍♀️🏃🏽‍♂️
