I know, I know this is late, but we've been working on stuff very special. There will be announcements soon to keep you all updated, but for now enjoy our own James Hauke's review of onward from the beginning of April!...

"I recently watched this movie with my family, and to be honest, it was the perfect escape from the horrific events that are going on in the world. I don't think it's any surprise that humanity is not at a good spot right now. We are constantly blaming each other for something that is out of our control. However, when I watched this film, I forgot all of that. I was transported to a world of fantasy and wonder, quick comedy and stunning visuals. A world I was happy to be in, even if the main characters faced certain perils each step of their adventure. I was much more willing to endure that then watch FOX news for a few minutes. The animation is beautiful and wonderfully complex, the characters are well developed and unique, and the film perfectly captures a sense of family, which was touching at a time like this. Staying home and watching a film is one of the best things to do right now, I've even started to make a list of all the films I've seen in quarantine, which I was more than willing to add this film too. So let's stay home and continue to watch beautiful films like these, and move ONWARD.

Also, I love all the DnD references. Maybe an Onward inspired campaign will grace my desk :)"

Parasite was one of the best films I have ever seen. The storytelling, cinematography and overall aesthetic of the film is so refreshing and wonderful. The story of Parasite follows the life of a poor family who begins to start working for a rich family in South Korea. It seems quite simple, doesn’t it? But simplicity is what makes it so interesting, and when it starts to dive deep into the story you’re glad that it isn’t something that would be hard to pay attention to. I went in knowing nothing about it and left extremely satisfied, which having no expectations in the first place is a unique thing to have. So if you were to see this film I’d suggest partaking in my quick ritual of avoiding any form of spoilers or anything of that matter. I do have to say that it can be very intense with its subject matter on the wealth gap in South Korea, but it’s all in moderation and isn’t overwhelming until it’s the climax. A lot of people shared concerns with the film being in Korean and having English subtitles, but I believe it was one of the coolest experiences to have. Being an American student I seem to be very secluded to my own American privileges especially with media, but to see a foreign film that won the Oscar for best film, without even being in the same language that in which the academy board speaks in, was truly amazing and pivotal in my future study of film. And to go along with subtitles, it was very interesting to see all the cultural differences between America and Korea. For instance, it is customary for many Asian countries to take off your shoes when entering someone’s homes, which in America is honestly give or take. One of the characters even took off their shoes during an intense plot point in the film. Parasite was not only an entertaining piece of film, but it was also quite educational to another culture in the world. I saw Parasite nearly a month ago and I can’t stop thinking about it. Now that you can rent I suggest you watch it when you have time. It is amazing.

1917 was not only a film but an experience. It follows the story of two soldiers who are tasked with delivering a message to the British frontline to call off an upcoming attack. If they fail the battle would lead to a massacre totaling 1,600 British soldiers. As the men only have a few hours to carry out their orders, the film is made to look as if it was one long continuous shot, which immersed the viewer completely. Along with wonderful color composition and capturing performances, 1917 is one of the most engaging films out right now.

"Nearly after a week of initially watching 1917, I can't stop thinking about it. The film is quite honestly a technical marvel, and has gotten me interested in doing some sort of one shot project. It was also really nice to see a WWI film for a change. There are so many WWII films out that the subject matter is saldy becoming stale, but now that there is a shift towards the great war, I'm sure many new interesting stories will be told. I can't wait to watch this film again and find a new detail each time. 1917 is a masterpiece".

I saw Joker nearly two months ago on its initial release and I still stand amazed, I even waited so long to write a review for the film because I didn't know what to talk about other than how good it was. I often find myself referencing the film in my conversations. Joker follows the life of Arthur Fleck, a middle-aged man struggling with mental illness and various social constructs that limit his humanity as someone living with a mental illness. Even though it's set in the DC Extended Universe, the film felt very different and refreshing as it took a whole new perspective on the character. Instead of being a full blown action adventure, the film delve deep into the concepts of mental illness and society, making for a very impactful message on the role of society. Along with beautiful camera shots and interesting color coordination, the story felt very full and unique. Though disturbing, Joker is able to bring a very entertaining and important story that in it of itself spreads an important message of the infamous Golden Rule.

JoJo Rabbit has the ability to quickly capture your heart and take a controversial historical subject and turn it into a film that makes us think of our past and how it establishes our future, while still being very humorous and joyful. The film follows the life 10 year old JoJo, one of the newest additions to the Hi**er youth nearing the end of the Second World War, and who else to help him through this be found life than his imaginary friend, Afolf Hi**er. Eventually JoJo understands the cause he has been helping, and has to face the decision of whether he should continue serving his nation or help those who are victimized by his nation's actions. JoJo Rabbit is able to spread kindness through comedy and satire, even if the subject matter of N**i rule suggests a direction of hate and discrimination. Along with a wonderful message of anti-hate, the visual style of the film is very appealing, very reminiscent of older Wes Anderson films. The only problem found with this film is the lack of elaboration on some characters, but with most movies, a concise and easy to follow plot is much more valuable than a drawn out story of each and every decision made by the characters. Taika Waititi, the films director, writer and even the actor who portrayed Imaginary Adolf Hi**er was able to convey a range of emotions that are very important to the human soul through the blind nationalism of a young German boy.

During the industrial age, great minds Thomas Edison, George Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla engaged in a battle of witt and technology that determined who’s electrical system would power the future of mankind. The Current War follows the events of this race for electricity and elaborates the struggles of each inventors strides toward success.
Though being quite historically accurate, some events and character relations were obviously changed in preference for entertaining scenes, but as a movie critic, that didn't bother me as much as someone who may study those moments in history.
The film had a cast of many renowned actors, such as Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Shannon, Tom Holland, and Nicholas Hoult. These actors were able to capture the minds of this turning point in history, and still be entertaining to see on the silver screen.
The biggest flaw of this film was that with the following of multiple characters, the scenes jumped back and forth a lot, often confusing the viewer as to what exactly is going on, but that only seemed to be a problem at the beginning of the movie, as the characters were being established. I believe that this problem could have been easily fixed if the story was told through a short TV series, being able to elaborate on many events as episodes rather than quickly paced scenes.
Overall the film was a wonderful adaptation of a strong turning point in history, that would shape the future indefinitely. If you are a student, or just enjoy films about history such as The Imitation Game, then you will enjoy this entertaining film.

"The Peanut Butter Falcon is a very heartwarming story but it felt quite incomplete. The film follows the story of a young man with downsyndrome and how he escapes the grasp of is over protective care giver and finds a run away fisherman who didn't leave off on a good note from his boss, both are now in search of bigger purpose. Meanwhile the caregiver and the fisherman's old crew chases after them hoping to real them back into their fixed reality. Though the characters, concept and overall aesthetic were very pleasing and fun, the way the story was told was honestly quite incomplete. The plot points that mattered lacked details, while the plot points that didn't matter, ran on for too long. I do want to still address that the characters in this move were really interesting and I was able to relate to them in each way they portrayed them, so not knowing a lot about them was bummer. If the characters and story was expanded upon, this movie would be a perfect feel good movie. Still a great movie for a night on the couch. Also for a small film company this film was actually quite impressive, but didn't necessarily stack up against the major block busters of the season."

"IT Chapter Two was a very interesting addition to a now classic tale. Though the losers club defeated 'IT', 27 years has passed and they all are forced to come back to the town they swore to forget and finally end this manifestation of evil and fear, before any more lives are affected. With a wonderful main cast that portray the younger cast from the first movie perfectly, and terrifying special effects, this movie offers a great story and a burst of dopamine. Though the story was intriguing, it felt rushed and with this full cast of A-List actors, some characters didn't get the screen time they deserved, even for a nearly 3 hour movie. Some special effects also seemed unnecessary and I would've liked more plot points then a scene that was designed to scare the audience. Overall it was a fun horror movie. It never dragged on, and it was only rushed in the mid scenes. It offered perfect closure to a terrifying tale."
"I also went to the AMC theatre for this film here in the downtown Kalamazoo area, and it was one of the best experiences I've had there. Hats off to the Kalamazoo AMC staff of September 13 2019"
