It’s been a helluva year. Sundance, SXSW, Tribeca, now Venice…directing my first film. Line producing another. 8 states, 7 countries and over a dozen film festivals with countless projects. This smile is genuine...I’m so so proud of myself and my collaborators. But I’ve been an absolute champ at ignoring my body and it’s time I listen ! I’m taking the month of August off, and mayyybe most of September too (minus Venice Film Festival😋) I plan to go full mermaid-mode and chill by the beach, swim, hang with my yónce and call my mom. This movie STOLE my heart. Anyone who knows me knows how much it means to me. It is THE. FIRST. FEATURE. FILM. that I ever produced on my own. It came to me through fate, and came together just the same. In only FOUR. MONTHS…we financed, cast, prepped, crewed, and shot this film. It was my grad school. It was my kindergarten. It is, what I believe to be, the true start of my career. Eleven years later—THIS is the project where I found my voice—where I found that ALL I EVER want to work on in this world is comedy. FEMALE-EMPOWERED comedy especially. This crew became an honest to god family. We laughed so hard. We got to go to work every day LOVING what we did. We hardly ever went into overtime. We got the job done, even against the odds of our small budget or like me having COVID the first week of shooting (and having to produce from a hotel room in my hometown while 30 crew members hung out at my parents house). There are so many names, cast, crew, agents, producers, vendors that I have to thank for bringing this to life, but most importantly I want to thank the Tribeca Institute for giving us our perfect home despite over 13 thousand film submissions!!! This year has been so bananas and we are feeling for all our people affected by the strikes the wars the economy the pain !!! It’s all so much !!! The one plus side is that we have still been able to continue supporting soooo many filmmakers and musicians in the past few months ! We have eight amazing shorts from this year to share with you but will start with one… SELLING RABBITS - written & directed by Hannah Schulman.

Hannah joined team MIRMADE first as a PA turned AD turned Director. I first met Hannah when I was told that as a ceramicist she’s crafted many a mermaid. It felt like beshert. She’s dear friends with our co leader Abbie and has worked on SO many MIRMADE features, commercials, & shorts it was a no brainer that we’d support her directorial debut. I’ve always functioned on a foundation of to-do lists and bucket-lists. The former acting as daily reminders of what I must achieve for each of my 5-10 projects in production, the latter as a list of dreams to attain during the rare moments of rest in between the to dos.

To be featured in Filmmaker Magazine has always been one of those dream bucket list items. It is the one industry trade that has always spoken to me the most—consistently showcasing independent voices in cinema and particularly in New York. It’s been around for (literally) as long as I’ve been alive and to be published in its 30th year on my 30th year of life is truly mind boggling.

I wrote this article in between juggling many projects and dozens of to-dos. It is such a special reminder how important it is for me to take the time to share my voice, my experiences, and my findings. As many who really know me know, I have an immense passion for supporting the younger generation of filmmakers, giving them the advice and answers I was never given when starting out. Even if I get too busy at times for the individual coffees or calls, I like to think that just seeing me in action can give young filmmakers the confidence in this business that took me so long to develop.

This article does more than just inspire, it gives concrete information on how and why (or why not) to start a production company. It’s a question I’m asked frequently, and given my pedantic passions it felt like the perfect first article for this trade.

And yes, first. Though the box has been checked on my bucket list, I truly hope this is the first of many articles with the Filmmaker team. Thank you once again to Editor in Chief Scott Macaulay for the opportunity and to the brilliant Abbie Jones for the hook up. Special shout out to Epoch and Ways & Means who I mention in the article as incredible colleagues and influences. To my badass femme peers Emma Seligman and Savannah Leaf for sharing this issue. Spent the past two and a half months traveling around the country and finally am back in my city. In six months we’ve produced or EPed three feature films…all with female directors, DPs, and/or writers. On top of this, we’ve continued to make commercials, short films and music vids, working with incredible talent both old and new. I’ve been doing a lot of writing and painting and singing in my (very lil) free time, and am definitely becoming sentimental and emotional for this summer…which will marks my 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY as a filmmaker(!!!) It’s truly crazy to think of all that has happened in just a decade. I started my very first job as an intern on a feature and spent the next years PAing on every set I could get hired on. Each job I continued to learn and I love that I’m still learning with each job today !!!! I could write so so much more because I’m obsessed with my job and our industry but of course I have lots of calls to make so will jump with this.. I hope I can continue to inspire young women and filmmakers the next decades to come—I love it when you reach out to me to ask me questions, I love it when we get to bring you on to our sets, I love meeting new artists and pushing the boundaries of my own creativity and entrepreneurship. There’s so much fun things coming down the line and so much to be proud of.
