Ballast Water Pump is a pump that transfers ballast water in a ballast tank. Ballast water is generally seawater. It is very crucial during discharging and loading operations to stabilize the trim of a vessel and add weight for the vessel.

The Prime Mover of a Water Ballast Pump was Electric Motor, Steam or Hydraulic type.

If the vessel had no ballast water treatment, prior to arrival must have a ballast exchange to eliminate the microorganism and contaminants to discharge in loading ports.

Economizer is called also as Main Boiler. It helps the Aux. Boiler to produce steam during navigation by means of heating the fin tubes coming from the exhaust gas of the main engine.

Forced Draft Fan is a type of fan supplying pressurized air to Aux. Boiler furnace. This fan supplying air for combustion and purging to take out combustible gases prior to starting.

Effects of abnormal function of Forced Draft Fan:

* Hard starting of Aux. Boiler.
* Dark Smoke in the funnel.
* Possible explosion if not proper purging.
* Delaying of discharging operation.

Pumping Down in Refrigeration System:

Pumping down is a process of collecting refrigerant from the system into the receiver.

The purpose of pumping down are listed below:

* Collecting refrigerant when shutting down or dismantling.
* Removing atmospheric air or moisture in the system
* Pressure testing in the system.

Procedures in pumping down of refrigerant in the refrigeration system:

1. While the system is in normal mode, close the King Valve while the compressor is running.

2. You will notice that the suction pressure goes down slowly then the compressor will automatically stop due to the low pressure cut out activated. Let the compressor stop automatically for 2-3 times.

3. Then close the suction valve and discharge valve of a compressor.

Main Air Compressor is a reciprocating compressor to supply highly pressurized air to start the main engine and auxiliary engines. Pressurized air is stored in an air bottle to supply for a special purpose. A pressure regulating valve is provided which reduces pressure and supplies controlled air from the storage air bottle. The control air filter controls the input as well as output air in the air bottle. The reduced air pressure used for the pneumatic control system, & deck and engine service air.
