"On May 8, 2023, busses of activists, volunteers, members of various organizations, restaurant workers and other low-wage workers set out from New York City, Washington, DC, and Connecticut to join One Fair Wage in Albany, New York. The goal was simple. The goal was to demand One Fair Wage for all workers before the legislative session ends on June 8, 2023.
The event was in honor of mothers leading up to this years' Mother's Day, since the majority of tipped workers are women. If you or someone in your life has never worked in a restaurant before or for tips, you may still be unaware of the fact that the federal minimum wage for servers in restaurants and catering is still a paltry $2.13 an hour. Since it appears the federal government is either unwilling or incapable taking the necessary actions in order to address this injustice with federal legislation, it is up to us all to work at the state, county, and local level for legislation to provide restaurant workers with the dignity they have long deserved and been denied, with a living wage of at least $17 an hour plus tips to be phased in by 2026. Including tips for hard work and great service, this would approach a living wage for most areas of New York and elsewhere.
As the New York Times has reported, “The National Restaurant Association uses mandatory $15 food-safety classes to turn waiters and cooks into unwitting funders of its battle against minimum wage increases” for restaurant workers, nation-wide. This practice must end and we must all join together as siters and brothers to make this practice illegal and punishable by fines and prison. The most harmful crimes against humanity are often totally legal..."
