The Supreme Court on Monday rejected Turkey's bid to shut down lawsuits in U.S. courts stemming from a violent brawl outside the Turkish ambassador's residence in Washington more than five years ago that left anti-government protesters badly beaten.

The justices did not comment in turning away Turkey's arguments that American law shields foreign countries from most lawsuits. Lower courts ruled that those protections did not extend to the events of May 16, 2017, when during a visit by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, "Turkish security forces violently clashed with a crowd of protesters," as one judge described the situation.

Don't push nuclear-armed Russia into a corner, says Lukashenko

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko warned Ukraine and the West on Friday not to force his ally Russia into a corner, saying Moscow had nuclear weapons for a reason.

In extracts of an interview with the American TV channel NBC released by Belarus's state news agency, Lukashenko said: "The most important thing is, don't drive your interlocutor and even your opponent into a corner. So you mustn't cross those lines - those red lines, as the Russians say. You can't cross them."

"As for nuclear weapons, any weapon is a weapon created for something," Lukashenko was quoted as saying.

"Russia has clearly outlined its position: God forbid there will be an attack on the territory of the Russian Federation; in that event, Russia can use all types of weapons if necessary."

After bridge blast, Putin promises "harsh" response if Ukrainian attacks continue

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that Ukraine had carried out "terrorist acts" against Russia and pledged to react forcefully if they continued.

In televised remarks, Putin said Moscow had launched long-range missile attacks against Ukraine's energy, military and communications infrastructure on Monday in retaliation for an attack on a vital bridge linking Russia to the annexed Crimean peninsula over the weekend.

"It is obvious that the Ukrainian secret services ordered, organised and carried out the terrorist attack aimed at destroying Russia's critical civilian infrastructure," Putin said of the bridge explosion.

Ukrainian officials were exultant after the blast but Kyiv has not claimed responsibility.

"Through its actions, the Kyiv regime has put itself on a par with the most odious of international terrorist groups. It is simply impossible to leave crimes of this kind unanswered," Putin said, in opening remarks at a meeting of his powerful Security Council.

Putin said Russia would respond "harshly" to any further attacks by Ukraine.

"If attempts continue to carry out terrorist acts on our territory, Russia's responses will be harsh and in their scale will correspond to the level of threats created for the Russian Federation. No one should have any doubt about that," Putin said.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg joins world leaders at state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II

Upon her passing, the Secretary General paid tribute to the Queen as ❝a strong supporter of our transatlantic Alliance, our armed forces and our values.❞

Queen Elizabeth II knew and worked with all NATO Secretaries General since the founding of the Alliance, and she had a lifetime of close association with the UK’s Armed Forces.

In a last act of duty to honour Her Majesty the Queen, thousands of military personnel paid their final respects to their late Commander in Chief.

At 12.15pm as silence fell across London, Army precision kicked in with flawless accuracy.

Activities were coordinated by Army Signallers who ensured the Queen’s funeral ran precisely to the chimes of one of the world’s most famous clocks at the top of Elizabeth Tower, also known as Big Ben.

In a procession from Westminster Hall to Westminster Abbey for the funeral service, the Queen’s coffin was carried on a 123-year-old State Gun Carriage of the Royal Navy, and drawn by sailors. On Parliament Square, a tri-Service Guard of Honour was accompanied by a band of the Royal Marines.

The procession itself was led by 200 musicians of massed pipers and drummers of Scottish and Irish Regiments, members of the Gurkhas and Royal Air Force.

Following the funeral service, the Queen’s coffin was drawn from Westminster Abbey to Wellington Arch, led by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, before its final journey to Windsor Castle.

While in London, the Secretary General met with His Majesty King Charles III at Buckingham Palace. Mr Stoltenberg offered his deepest condolences to the King and Royal Family, as well as to the people of NATO Allies the United Kingdom and Canada, and of the Commonwealth

Russia offers fast-track citizenship to residents of occupied Ukraine

President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree simplifying the process for residents of Ukraine’s Russian-occupied Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions to acquire Russian citizenship and passports.

The decree extends a scheme available since 2019 to residents of areas controlled by Russian-backed separatists in Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

UN chief asks to meet Putin, Zelenskyy to negotiate end to war

Antonio Guterres, the UN secretary-general, has separately requested meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy in their countries’ capitals to try to negotiate an end to the nearly two-month war in Ukraine.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Wednesday that Guterres had sent letters to the UN missions of Russia and Ukraine, asking Putin to receive him in Moscow and Zelenskyy to welcome him in Kyiv.

“The Secretary-General said, at this time of great peril and consequence, he would like to discuss urgent steps to bring about peace in Ukraine and the future of multilateralism based on the Charter of the United Nations and international law,” Dujarric said in a statement.

In an Easter appeal, Guterres on Tuesday called for a four-day truce during the Orthodox Christian Holy Week to allow for civilian evacuations and the delivery of humanitarian aid to hard-hit areas.

“Humanitarian needs are dire. People do not have food, water, supplies to treat the sick or wounded or simply to live day-to-day,” Guterres said in New York.

Turkey explains position on Ukraine

Some NATO members want to use Ukraine conflict to weaken Russia, says Ankara’s foreign minister.

Turkey wants to negotiate an end to the conflict in Ukraine, while some other NATO members would like to see it drag on as a way to harm Russia, Ankara’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Wednesday in a TV interview. In a lengthy appearance on CNN Turk, Cavusoglu addressed Turkey’s decision not to sanction Moscow and why the Istanbul talks between Russia and Ukraine failed, among other things.

“There are countries within NATO that want the Ukraine war to continue. They see the continuation of the war as weakening Russia. They don’t care much about the situation in Ukraine,” Cavusoglu said.

While he did not name any names, US President Joe Biden said earlier this month that the conflict in Ukraine “could continue for a long time,” which was echoed by the former CIA chief of Russian operations.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said after a phone call with G7 leaders on Tuesday that the West is united in not allowing Russia to win and determined to “continue to arm the Ukrainian military so that it can continue to defend itself against [Russian] attack.”

Turkey has decided not to join the US-led sanctions against Russia because they are unilateral, unlike the “binding sanctions decided at the UN,” Cavusoglu told CNN Turk. Ankara articulated its position on the first day of the Ukraine conflict, which is to continue diplomatic contacts with both sides, as “a country that both sides trust.”

Zelensky calls on West to supply weapons

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged Western governments to supply planes, tanks and missile defence systems to his country.

In an impassioned, late-night video address, he said heavy weapons which could defend freedom in Europe were instead gathering dust in stockpiles.

Mr Zelensky complained that Russian aircraft could not be shot down with machine guns.

"What is Nato doing? Is it being run by Russia? What are they waiting for? It's been 31 days. We are only asking for 1% of what Nato has, nothing more," he added.
