Today in History - April 27th, 1865

Boilers on the steamboat SS Sultana explode on the Mississippi River, killing around 1800 of the nearly 2500 passengers. Most were Union POWs returning home and many who survived the initial explosion were too weak to survive in the river and sadly were drowned.
It is one of the worst maritime disasters in US history and, amazingly, little to no excavation or investigation of any kind has been done on this tragedy. No one involved was officially punished, even though there was evidence of gross negligence for safety both in preparation and ex*****on of the journey
