Jessie Maple, a bacteriologist who took up filmmaking in the 1970s, became the first Black woman to join the camera operators union in New York and went on to direct trailblazing independent films. Maple turned first to journalism and then to film, working as a camera operator and a documentarian before releasing her first feature, “Will” (1981), a family drama that she made for less than $12,000. Jessie Maple passed away at her home on 30 May 2023, in Atlanta. She was 86.

The Ukraine & Russia crisis - broken down in simple terms for those that have no idea what is going on.

- Ukraine used to be in an abusive relationship with Russia, feeding him, letting him use her car & giving him whatever he asked for until she built up the confidence to call it quits back in 1991

- Since then Ukraine has been working on herself, becoming a strong independent woman with help from friends like France, America, Poland etc. offering her support, loaning her money, & helping her find her way.

- Ukraine has been enjoying being single for 30 years & looking forward to continuing to grow & create new friendships.

- Now Russia being the toxic Ex that it is wants her back, and doesn’t want her meeting new people or creating any new relationships.

- A couple of weeks ago Russia started sitting in the front of Ukraine’s house & when her friends ask him what was he doing there, he said “Oh nothing, just getting a little bit of exercise in, that’s all.”

- After her friends told her that Russia was potentially getting ready to do something bad to her, he said “They’re lying, they just want you to be scared of me & that’s not what it is”

- Yesterday Russia broke into Ukraine’s house, beating her up & “taking advantage” of her while on Livestream & double dog daring any of her friends to do something about it & if they do want the smoke, Russia got that thang on him.

A number of new laws will significantly help community college students transfer into both and campuses and will boost financial aid and housing assistance as part of a $47.1-billion higher education package signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Two of the bills were designed to clarify and simplify degree requirements for transfer students. Assembly Bill 928 requires the Cal State and UC systems to establish a general education transfer process for lower-division students that identifies and expands the specific required courses students need to gain acceptance. The second, Assembly Bill 111, requires a common course numbering system across all to ensure that a student doesn’t take excess units to transfer. 📸: Mel Melcon

100 years ago today, the deadliest racial massacre in U.S. history began in the thriving Greenwood African American community of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

In May of 1921, the imprisonment of Dick Rowland, a black man falsely accused of assaulting a white woman, sparked the Tulsa massacre. A lynch mob gathered to hang Rowland and black Tulsans hurried to the courthouse to protect him. From May 31 to June 1, white mobs ransacked, razed, and burned over 1,000 homes, businesses, and churches in Greenwood, and murdered scores of African Americans.

“For fully forty eight hours, the fires raged and burned everything in its path and it left nothing but ashes and burned safes and trunks and the like where once stood beautiful homes and business houses. And so proud, rick, black Tulsa was destroyed by fire—that is its buildings and property; but its spirit was neither killed nor daunted.”- B. C. Franklin ⠀

Dozens of black-owned businesses were rebuilt in Greenwood within a year of the massacre, and hundreds more followed over the next three decades. This rapid rebuilding illustrates the energy and resiliency of the community.
