Back in 2019 we had a WMAQ radio reunion. Many of the on air staff and employees of the radio station at that time attended. On air personalities
Doug James, Pat Cassidy, Terry Stevens, Jim Tyler & Nancy Turner. News staff members as well as engineers, sales team members and other station personnel. For those of you who watch channel 7 in the mornings in Chicago, Roz Varon was a WMAQ "Dancing Dollar" before making her way to television. Plus Cheryl Raye was in attendance who was Terry Stevens producer of "The afternoon affair". Cheryl was the first female reporter in sports allowed to enter a locker room. She is still heard today on WBEZ. We had a great time. Here's a short video.

What is your favorite memory about WMAQ?

14/09/2019

As an employee of the radio station it was a great experience. As Nancy Turners producer, I had the opportunity to talk with so many fans on the phone who shared special song requests and stories. It was the greatest time of my life working there. WMAQ really connected with its fans through contests, personal appearances and features. One in particular was Irene Hughes the psychic Would take listener calls every evening and if you were havring marriage trouble you could call in and talk to Herb Glieberman a divorce attorney and if you were looking to find that special someone, you could do it with Terry Stevens on the "Afternoon Affair" where more than 100 couples met and eventually married. What are your memories about the radio station and the air personalities?.

670 WMAQ-AM was a 50,000 watt NBC Owned and Operated Radio station that used to broadcast from Chicago, Illinois. Throughout its historical days and memorable programs during the 1940's and 50's it was simply a radio giant. As the Golden Age of radio faded the station floundered through ratings and several format changes until it began to broadcast Country Music. From 1975 through 1986 WMAQ was a Country Music King. That's what this page is all about to remember the station during its country music era. WMAQ could be heard in 38 states and half of Canada at night due to its Clear Channel Signal. The contest "WMAQ is gonna make me Rich" was known throughout the entire listening area. People would answer their phones with the slogan "WMAQ is gonna make me Rich" in fear that if they didn't, they might miss out on winning a prize if the station called. It was one of the most successful promotions in the history of radio along with the Ad Campaign of the "Dancing Dollars." The "On Air" talent was second to none and almost all hired by programming genius, Bill Hennes.
The On-Air Talent included: "The Good Morning Guys" with Lee Sherwood then Joel Sebastian, Pat Cassidy, Tim Weigel and Jerry Taft. Mid-Days was hosted by Terry Stevens and the "Afternoon Affair" where nearly 100 couples met and married as a result of being on the show. PM Drive saw Charlie O'Neil and Jim Tyler host and evenings initially with Ellie Dylan and then Nancy Turner. Bob Tracy (the Polish Cowboy) Cal Daniels and Rich Renik were pretty much the weekend line-up. Before streaming and internet radio, WMAQ put its powerful 50,000 watt clear channel signal to good use as it was a perfect outlet for Fred Sanders and his overnight Truckers Radio program that had advertisers and features directly targeted to the over the road trucker. Other program features included: Psychic "Irene Hughes" and Divorce Attorney "Herb Glieberman" plus White Sox Baseball. It was a radio station that truly connected with the listening audience as well as all of the country music artists at that time. This page should bring back memories of a tremendously fun and innovative radio station that sadly no longer exists.
