Endangered: Short Tales for the Nearly Forgotten A seven-part anthology podcast celebrating Endangered Species Day. Created by Graham Sibley. Episode

Our hope with this podcast is that by seeing ourselves in these nearly forgotten creatures, we might fall a little bit more in love with all of the forgotten creatures on Earth -- and hopefully inspire some necessary changes to make our planet more habitable for all of us.

This is such a cool story -- flying sea turtles?! Check it out.

Due to changing ocean temperatures, hundreds of sea turtles have been washing up almost dead onto New England beaches. Because local aquariums don't have room to nurse them all back to health, the volunteer pilots of Turtles Fly Too have come to the rescue.

is another one of the amazing organizations we partnered with on .

William Robichaud and Lorraine Scotson have built an incredible team dedicated to helping save the Saola in the wild and conserving other threatened wildlife in the forests of the Annamite Mountains.

The Saola, also known as the Asian unicorn, is a forest dwelling bovine related to goats and antelopes. This beautiful and enigmatic mammal was discovered in May 1992 in north-central Vietnam. A rare zoological discovery, the Saola proved not only to be the first large mammal new to science in more than 50 years but one of the most spectacular finds of the 20th century. The race to save Saola is one of the highest priority conservation challenges of our time, requiring an unprecedented level of global support and cooperation.

The story in this episode was inspired by my wife, . Marilyn’s Taiwanese name is Yann (along the protagonist in the tale) and from the moment I met her, I thought she was a magical unicorn with super powers. And she's proved that to me everyday since. A huge thank you to , and for their talent and beauty bringing this tale to life.

Vultures and other birds play a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Africa’s vulture populations face the prospect of collapsing due to poachers poisoning the population. As the circling of vultures is often an indication of a recently deceased animal, poachers have been found to poison the carcasses of elephants in order to kill off vultures that may alert their illegal activities to authorities.

At one time the Black Footed Ferret was thought to be extinct due to their rapid decline and scarcity. Habitat loss, human-introduced diseases, and indirect poisoning from prairie dog control measures are causing their population to decline.

How can we help? Try visiting a zoo, museum or a nature center which has a black-footed ferret exhibit. If you’d like to make a donation, please visit blackfootedferret . org.

Lake Xochimilco, in the Valley of Mexico, is the only known home of the extremely rare Axolotl. Today, Lake Xochimilco exists more like a series of canals due to urbanization in Mexico City and consequently water pollution is the primary reason for their near extinction.

Few mammals are as imperiled as the Saola. Local hunting and the illegal trade in furs, traditional medicines, and for use of the meat in restaurants and food markets all contribute to the decline of the Saola.

Did you know some Humphead Wrasse have been observed to live over 30 years? Unfortunately, they are one of the most expensive live reef fishes in the world and a delicacy in Southeast Asia. The live reef fish trade continues to be a significant problem as poachers often resort to illegal and destructive fishing methods that threaten the region’s food security as well as its reefs.
