This holiday season, we find ourselves reflecting on the past year and on those who helped shape our storytelling initiative. To the nonprofits and community organizations whose stories we tell, thank you for inspiring us to do the work we do.

We’re looking forward to continuing to tell your stories next year and in the years to come. Happy holidays!

A recent national poll by NPR, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that 38 percent of households reported serious financial problems in the last few months.

The federal government has devoted tens of billions of dollars to rent relief, but only about 16 percent of those funds have been dispersed to renters in need.

With such a persistent level of need, organizations at the community level have done their best to help people make ends meet. In the last three months, our partners at findhelp have recorded over 130,000 housing service referrals across the country. These services include people seeking rent or utility assistance, temporary shelter, and help finding housing.

This Thanksgiving, we want to share one of our older stories about Pastor Paul Montoya, who looks after the homeless community in Pueblo, CO by delivering daily lunches and supplies.

Pastor Paul’s kindness reminds us of our partnering team at findhelp and the organizations we document who work to serve their communities to address social care issues. Without them, our magazine wouldn’t be possible.

We’re proud to announce that our very own Senior Multimedia Producer, Jim Tuttle, had his film “Training and a Chance” accepted into the Autism Society of Texas's Film Festival! We’re excited that a member of our team’s work is being recognized and that individuals with autism are being celebrated across Texas.

“Training and a Chance” follows Chef W. Reith and special education professional Allison Kolanko, who work to address unemployment in the autism community at Not Your Typical Deli in Gilbert, Arizona.

In 2016, JUST, a nonprofit financial platform, was cofounded in Austin, Texas.

JUST invests in ambitious Texas women to start and grow their businesses. Based on trust, they created a different way for hard working families to get ahead both personally and professionally. Since their start, JUST has lent over $8 million with a 99% repayment rate to Hispanic and Black women across the state.

In our last installment of our four-part miniseries on the housing and public health crisis, we want to highlight Jordan Ayala, a member of KC Tenants, a group working to address housing complexities that impact thousands of residents in Kansas City, MO.

Jordan is an economics Ph.D. candidate at the University of Missouri – Kansas City, a research scholar with the OSUN Economic Democracy Initiative at Bard College, and a member of the KC Tenants Strategy Team. Raised in Kansas, Ayala spent much of his twenties traveling and working in music and music education. After returning to Kansas City to continue his education, he joined KC Tenants in early 2020 to organize, support actions as security and police liaison, and eventually began to conduct data research and fight for housing rights.

It’s happening! Over the course of a year, we’ve followed the evolution of the Esperanza Community in Austin, which is home to 150 people experiencing homelessness.

This led us to the creation of ‘The Other Ones,’ a film about The Other Ones Foundation, a hardworking group of people who are building a safe, restorative environment in the midst of Austin's housing crisis.

Today we finally have the opportunity to share this powerful story about their work with you all!

Today, in our third installment of our miniseries on the housing and public health crisis, we want to highlight Magda Werkmeister, a member of KC Tenants, a group working to fight back against evictions in Kansas City, MO.

Magda coordinates the KC Tenants Hotline, which provides support and resources for callers across the area who are experiencing unsafe housing conditions and evictions. She is a student at Swarthmore College near Philadelphia, where she studies education and English. When campus housing closed at the beginning of the pandemic, Werkmeister returned home to live with her parents in Kansas City, where she became involved with KC Tenants.

Today, in our four-part miniseries on the housing and public health crisis, we want to highlight a different member of KC Tenants, a group working to fight against barriers that lead to housing inequities.

Meet Mark Bedell:

Mark is superintendent of Kansas City Public Schools, which has experienced student mobility rates as high as 60 percent in some of its schools. To help students’ families, KC Public Schools launched its Justice in the Schools program in 2018 to connect families with legal and social support. The program won the Council of Great City Schools Award in 2019 for using data to innovate, and the district has been working with KC Tenants to better understand housing problems and advocate for change.

As a part of a miniseries about the housing and public health crisis, we spoke with four people associated with KC Tenants, a group working to fight back against evictions.

Today, we’re introducing Sabrina Davis.

Now 62 years old, Davis was diagnosed with a severe autoimmune disease that ended her high-earning sales career. Her income now consists of Social Security and disability payments. As Davis’s income diminished, it became more difficult to find stable and safe housing. This summer, Davis became involved in KC Tenants’ North Star Team, which develops policy recommendations for city leaders.
