Oldd Wvrms: Abyssephale (2024) - mini-review
Belgian band Oldd Wvrms are out with tye album "Abyssephale", and this is a production that probably fits inside the progressive metal parameter somewhere. It is a two track affair this one, with epic length instrumental creations being the order of the day. Both songs alternate between a number of different landscapes, where a bombastic and slow variety of doom metal and a vibrant variety of what might be described as traditional heavy caters for the majority of the purebred metal contents. With slight left turns in the direction of thrash metal on occasion. In between this trio of metal landscapes we get a number of more delicate sections, where gentle instrumentation is a defining feature and careful melodies with instrument details to match dominate the arrangements. With a sometime use of textures and effects pulled in from the post-rock tradition. In addition the band do play around a little bit with noise textures throughout, as well as the occasional drone making the odd appearance. An album to seek out if a more progressive and expressive variety of instrumental progressive metal with a foot or so placed inside of the doom metal tradition strikes you as interesting.
