When it comes to child s*xual abuse and exploitation, a new look at the U.S. shows we’re not doing very well. The Economist Impact's groundbreaking Out of the Shadows Index shines a light on the prevention and response to child s*xual exploitation and abuse (CSEA) in the U.S. If this were a report card, the best performing state would only have a D. What this means for kids is that, as a nation, our safeguarding is wholly inadequate and our response system woefully underfunded.

On the latest episode of One in Ten, we invited Laura Avery and Katherine Stewart, the authors of the report, to talk to us about the report and how by being able to pinpoint weaknesses and challenges, we can develop state-specific roadmaps for improvement in child protection. If you haven’t already read the report, please make sure you do.

On the latest episode of One in Ten, Dr. Arline Geronimus joined us at the 2024 NCA Leadership Conference to talk about weathering, how health and aging have more to do with systemic oppression—how society treats us—than how well we take care of ourselves. It's a fascinating conversation you need to check out.

Would you recognize grooming if you saw it? We all think we know what it means, but that doesn’t mean we’re any good at spotting it—even if we’re parents determined to protect our kids from abuse. In fact, if anything, we’re overconfident about our ability to recognize grooming behaviors. Dr. Elizabeth Jeglic returns to One in Ten podcast to discuss recent research on the topic in this latest episode.

All of us have had to give more thought to climate change and its effects in recent years. But to what degree have we yet reckoned with the way in which climate change may increase violence against children? Which children are most likely to be affected? What preventative measures can we take now to help mitigate that risk? And how should this knowledge shape our services to children and families, both now and in the future? On this One in Ten podcast episode, we spoke with Dr. Jorge Cuartas, assistant professor of applied psychology at New York University and senior consultant on violence against children at the World Bank.

Children with intellectual and developmental disabilities are at an increased risk of abuse and neglect than children without those disabilities, so why aren’t there prevention programs for them that have been researched and proven to be effective? Dr. Melissa Bright from the Center for Violence Prevention Research joined One in Ten podcast to explore how few such programs exist, how we may create or adapt prevention programs for these children, and much more.

"Horrific stories of harm are by no means representative of the home-schooling movement. But without commonsense protections, abusers can use home-schooling as a tool to hide their crimes until it's too late."

NCA CEO and One in Ten host Teresa Huizar explored on USA TODAY how we can create prevent the small percentage of abusive parents from using homeschool to isolate their child with a policy environment that enhances safety for all children.

Be sure to check out our One in Ten podcast episode, "Keeping Kids in the Homeschool Boom" where Teresa interviewed Angela Grimberg from the Coalition For Responsible Home Education for more insights: https://oneintenpodcast.org/episodes/keeping-kids-safe-in-the-homeschool-boom/

LISTEN NOW: While the presence of child s*xual abuse images in child s*xual abuse cases is not new, the sheer scale and scope and ubiquity of it all certainly is. The exponential growth in the trading of these images has now created a sophisticated marketplace designed entirely around exploiting children.

We invited three guests to speak about this: Elizabeth and Ted Cross, eminent co-researchers of child s*xual abuse materials online, or CSAM, and Stefan Turkheimer, the vice president of public policy at RAINN.

The rise in myths and conspiracy theories about human trafficking have been one of the most frustrating parts of being a child abuse professional over the past few years. It has been a deadly game of whack a mole, because as soon as one myth or conspiracy theory is debunked, yet another arises.

Dr. Maureen Kenny, a professor of psychology at Florida International University, joined One in Ten to explore why and how these conspiracy theories were endorsed by a diverse college population in hopes that this would give us insight into better education strategies for the wider public.
