Sounds of One in Ten | How Good Are We at Keeping Kids Safe with Laura Avery and Katherine Stewart
When it comes to child sexual abuse and exploitation, a new look at the U.S. shows we’re not doing very well. The Economist Impact's groundbreaking Out of the Shadows Index shines a light on the prevention and response to child sexual exploitation and abuse (CSEA) in the U.S. If this were a report card, the best performing state would only have a D. What this means for kids is that, as a nation, our safeguarding is wholly inadequate and our response system woefully underfunded.
On the latest episode of One in Ten, we invited Laura Avery and Katherine Stewart, the authors of the report, to talk to us about the report and how by being able to pinpoint weaknesses and challenges, we can develop state-specific roadmaps for improvement in child protection. If you haven’t already read the report, please make sure you do.

On the latest episode of One in Ten, Dr. Arline Geronimus joined us at the 2024 NCA Leadership Conference to talk about weathering, how health and aging have more to do with systemic oppression—how society treats us—than how well we take care of ourselves. It's a fascinating conversation you need to check out.

One in Ten Soundbite | How Good Are Parents At Recognizing Grooming? with Elizabeth Jeglic, Ph.D.
Would you recognize grooming if you saw it? We all think we know what it means, but that doesn’t mean we’re any good at spotting it—even if we’re parents determined to protect our kids from abuse. In fact, if anything, we’re overconfident about our ability to recognize grooming behaviors. Dr. Elizabeth Jeglic returns to One in Ten podcast to discuss recent research on the topic in this latest episode.

A World Without Sexual Violence
One in Ten: Climate Change and Violence Against Children, with Jorge Cuartas, Ph.D.
All of us have had to give more thought to climate change and its effects in recent years. But to what degree have we yet reckoned with the way in which climate change may increase violence against children? Which children are most likely to be affected? On this One in Ten podcast episode, we spoke with Dr. Jorge Cuartas, assistant professor of applied psychology at New York University and senior consultant on violence against children at the World Bank.

A Sea of Red Dots: The Explosion in Online Child Sexual Abuse, with Elizabeth and Ted Cross and Stefan Turkheimer
While the presence of child sexual abuse images in child sexual abuse cases is not new, the sheer scale and scope and ubiquity of it all certainly is. The exponential growth in the trading of these images has now created a sophisticated marketplace designed entirely around exploiting children.
We invited three guests to speak about this: Drs. Elizabeth and Ted Cross, eminent co-researchers of child sexual abuse materials online, or CSAM; and Stefan Turkheimer, Vice President of Public Policy at RAINN.

One in Ten podcast: Why Do People Believe Conspiracy Theories About Human Trafficking?
The rise in myths and conspiracy theories about human trafficking have been one of the most frustrating parts of being a child abuse professional over the past few years. It has been a deadly game of whack a mole, because as soon as one myth or conspiracy theory is debunked, yet another arises.
Dr. Maureen Kenny, a professor of psychology at Florida International University, joined One in Ten to explore why and how these conspiracy theories were endorsed by a diverse college population in hopes that this would give us insight into better education strategies for the wider public.

One in Ten podcast: Glimpsing the Iceberg Corporal Punishment and Physical Abuse, w/ Dr. Amy Slep
To truly address child physical abuse, we have to understand the scope of the problem and how parents’ use of corporal punishment can escalate to the point in which children are harmed. As you'll learn in this episode of One in Ten, what Dr. Amy Slep and her team did was to set up their research in such a way that it was truly anonymous, and parents could feel very safe to be completely honest about their use of corporal punishment and even their own self-identified physical abuse of their own children.
