Revisited Shanghai Noon and Knights. Always enjoyed Noon and it stood up well, the quality of filmmaking is better than Rush Hour and personally I find Owen Wilson much more likeable than Chris Tucker with some genuinely funny bits of dialogue. It also features some solid Kung Fu, with Yuen Biao helping out with the choreography. It’s slightly longer than an average Chan film, which isn’t a bad thing. Knights is much more of a kids film, with the action sequences taking on a more slapstick Chaplin feel. There’s loads of silly cameos from historical figures as well, such as Chaplin and Conan Doyle. Great to have Donnie as the bad guy, despite their fight being just OK. I have a soft spot for it though as it’s fun all the way through.

Eventually took in my 4K copy of this classic, looked amazing and the cast is cracking! I was disappointed by the action on a rewatch. The Michelle Yeoh/Ziyi Zhang weapons battle is excellent but the rest are speeded up and short. The final battle with Jade Fox is stuffed with laughable CGI and looks rubbish. To be the greatest Wuxia film you need the action as well as everything else. That’s why OUATIC wins for me. What do you think?

Just been revisiting this film after it was mentioned by as his favourite. So much to love about it, a great Beggar So, Yuen Biao Vs Lam Ching Ying and could there be a better Lam Sai Wing than Sammo? The only reasons it isn’t the finest for me is the annoying plot point with Sammo’s long lost brother taking up far too much of the film, plus Fun Hark On’s; Koi Tai Hoi is just too nasty for me, makes you feel a bit queasy. Still a stonewall classic though!

Fascinating few days rewatching the Rush Hour Trilogy- it’s a relic of the early 00s with Jackie being able to perform less action set pieces per film, as his age caught up with him. Interestingly from the second film, the tone is very misogynistic as Carter and Lee inhabit a 13 year old boys fantasy where every country presents them with beautiful models for them to get ‘mushu’ from. Even Lee who starts off as stoic, acts like a randy school boy by part 3. Overall I have to say they are enjoyable with some funny moments, and make you appreciate how good Chan’s earlier action scenes actually were. Yes the 3rd part is by far the worst and the 2nd is probably the best. Fun to revisit but let’s leave their tone back in 2006.
