We bring you an unadulterated and unfiltered take on the current problems with the veterinary education system in Nepal through the experiences of recent students. We have 4 recent vet graduates with us on this episode discussing on the topic of veterinary education in Nepal. The veterinarians are former central committee members of the Nepal Veterinary Students Association (NVSA) from the current 4 vet schools of Nepal.

Guests:
1. Dr Anjali Nepal (NVSA- AFU, RECOM Coordinator, 2019-20),
Agriculture and Forestry University
2. Dr Chiran Krishna Tiwari (NVSA IAAS, Secretary, 2019-20),
Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science - Tribhuvan University
3. Dr Milan Khanal (NVSA-NPI, President, 2019-20),
Nepal Polytechnic Institute - College of Agriculture, Engineering, Medical & Veterinary Science - Purbanchal University
4. Dr Utsaha Khatri (NVSA-HICAST, Editor-in-chief, 2019-20),
Himalayan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology - Purbanchal University

The reason we brought you this episode is to have an open discussion about the problems in the veterinary education which we all know but don’t openly talk about. Veterinary education is considered as a foundation of the entire veterinary profession and animal health service, but this foundation has been deteriorating year by year. We all faced the substandard veterinary teaching and wanted for it to get better, but the situation is still the same. We hope this episode will get people aware about the issues and is also a plea towards the current figures of authorities to work in the direction of improving the problematic situation.

We have ex-students from all the vet schools in Nepal, so that we can see an overall picture in different universities and compare/contrast between them. The experiences of the recently graduated young vets help us see the real situation, the prevalent gaps, struggles, challenges and standards of the current veterinary education. In this episode we talk about regularity of classes, course curriculum, university politics, clinical trainings, friendships, examination etc.

On the occasion of the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) 2022 (18th-24th Nov), we bring you a special episode, “Introduction to Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)”. We have Dr. Nabin Paudel as our AMR expert for the discussion. In this segment, we discuss in detail about AMR (introduction, situation, challenges, global and national scenario), and antibiotics (history, residue, falsified/counterfeit drugs, alternatives, prudent use, and stewardship). We also dive into the Drug Act of Nepal and how veterinarians are still legally not allowed to prescribe any veterinary drugs in Nepal.

This is the first of the two-part special series on the occasion of the WAAW 2022. The theme of this year is ‘Preventing antimicrobial resistance together. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a threat to humans, animals, plants, and the environment and It affects us all. This is why this year’s theme calls for collaboration across sectors to preserve the efficacy of these critical medicines. Fighting AMR is a truly global endeavor and must be addressed through a One Health approach.
