US President Joe Biden has called for Russian President Vladimir Putin to be tried for war crimes as evidence emerges of atrocities allegedly committed by Russian forces in Ukraine.

There is mounting international anger over the alleged killing of civilians in Bucha, a town near the capital Kyiv.

"This guy is brutal," Biden said of the Russian leader, adding that he believes Vladimir Putin "is a war criminal". Without evidence, Russia said images of atrocities had been staged by Ukraine.

Biden's intervention follows the publication of new satellite photos by the earth observation company Maxar, which show bodies lining Bucha's streets during its occupation by Russian forces.

Qatar’s Barshim, Italy’s Tamberi share Olympic high jump gold:

Qatar’s Mutaz Barshim and Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi have put the nightmare of serious injuries behind them to share a rare Olympic athletics gold in the high jump.

Both Barshim, 30, and the 29-year-old Tamberi did not have a failed attempt until they attempted to clear the 2.39-meter mark.

After three failures each at 2.39, they ended up tied and entered a conversation with an Olympic official, who first offered them a “jump-off” to decide the matter.

“Can we have two golds,” Barshim asked him.

The official nodded, and the two athletes clasped hands and whooped for joy.

Tamberi added Olympic gold to a world indoor and a European title, both in 2016, and celebrated exuberantly despite the absence of spectators at the pandemic-affected games.

The jumper collapsed to the ground and rolled around in ecstasy.

Qatar wins first Olympic gold as Fares Ibrahim sets Olympic record:

Qatar weightlifter Fares Ibrahim creates history by winning the country’s first Olympic gold medal in weightlifting.

23-year-old Ibrahim won the gold medal in the 96kg category at the Tokyo games lifting a total weight of 402kg, which is an Olympic record.

On his way to the gold, he also set an Olympic record in Clean & Jerk lifting 225kg. In sn**ch he lifted 177kg.

Venezuela's Keydomar Vallenilla Sanchez won sliver and Georgia's Anton Pliesnoi claimed bronze.

Carl Levin, Michigan's longest-serving senator, dies at 87:

The former senator, died Thursday at 87. His family and the Levin Center at Wayne State University's law school did not release a cause of death in an evening statement. He had been living with lung cancer since age 83.

“We are all devastated by his loss. But we are filled with gratitude for all of the support that Carl received throughout his extraordinary life and career, enabling him to touch so many people and accomplish so much good,” the statement said.

India reports more than 6,000 daily Covid deaths — highest ever in the world:

India's daily reported death toll from the coronavirus crisis reached a record high on Thursday, with more than 6,000 people succumbing to the disease.

That surpassed a record number of daily fatalities reported by the United States this year.

India’s health ministry data showed 6,148 Covid-related deaths were recorded over a 24-hour period, as daily reported cases remained below 100,000 for the third consecutive day.

Five officers jumped into a pond in an unsuccessful attempt to save a drowning 14-year-old boy, authorities said:

A police officer died Friday while trying to save a 14-year-old boy drowning in a pond in Worcester, Mass., authorities said.

The teenager, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at a hospital after divers recovered his body, police Chief Steven Sargent said at a news conference.

The officer, one of five who jumped in the water, was identified as Manny Familia, 38.

Officers responded to a city park pond at 1:35 p.m. Two people were brought to shore by first responders, the chief said, but officers soon realized one of their own was missing.

Twitter has just 3 weeks to comply with India’s new IT rules:

Amongst the big tech companies in India, Twitter is currently the odd one out. Google, Facebook, and WhatsApp have already complied with India’s new intermediary rules. However, the microblogging platform is yet to do that.

Yesterday, the Delhi high court directed Twitter to comply with these rules within three weeks. Notably, Twitter had asked the government of India for at least a three-month extension to implement the necessary steps.

India accelerates vaccine supplies in fight against COVID-19:

India's Serum Institute will increase production of AstraZeneca (AZN.L) COVID-19 vaccines by nearly 40% in June, officials said on Monday, in the first step towards alleviating a shortage that has worsened the country's battle with coronavirus.

The world's second most-populous nation has struggled with a catastrophic outbreak of COVID-19 since last month which is only now starting to abate after killing tens of thousands of people.

Qatar charges migrant activist with taking payment to spread disinformation:

Qatar's public prosecution has charged a Kenyan man who has written about migrant rights in the Gulf Arab state with receiving payment to spread disinformation, the government's communication office (GCO) said on Saturday.

Malcolm Bidali, who had been writing under a pseudonym, was arrested on May 5 for violating Qatar's security laws, according to a Qatari official. Rights groups have voiced concern that his detention may be in reprisal for human rights work.
