My visit to Darma was a real challenge. I had heard the trek to Darma was not an easy job. Wanted to experience the trek, but my team members were completely against it. With the support of local partners two of us got a chance to use the heli service to reach Darma. And through flying it was hardly a 10 minutes of journey, We trekked back to Nayabasti, it took us 2 days of journey.
I was very excited on the day of my travel to Darma. reached Darchula for the heli service at the time I was told, but it was just a long wait, at the end of the day we were told we could not fly because of the weather conditions and we would get our chance the next day. Next day, again with the same excitement we were at the heli service at the same time, again continued to wait...the result was same as the previous day. The third day again, it was the same and the fourth day we got a chance to fly to Darma.
With the biting cold weather in the mornings and in the evenings and high altitude I developed high altitude sickness like severe headache, and shortness of breath. But was able to manage after a day of stay there.
I should say the people of Darma are very warm hearted and their simple life style made them the most happiest people, I had read somewhere Bhutan is the most happiest country in the world. And I would say people of Darma were the most happiest people at least in India. They are far away from the busy life of other parts of the world.
I had some recordings from Nayabasti community, it was their audio recording which made Darma people to receive us warm heartedly. And that also made our work simpler.
When I visited Darma, the first thing I noticed was they had some minimum service of internet, where they were given access to net without educating them to how to use. All were aware of tiktok, whatsapp ....but what was missing was the awareness of how to use the facility available for the benefit of the community.
I had several meetings with the Darma community. They were eager to embrace the idea of CDR. They recorded their voice messages for their dearest ones at Nayabasti. They understood the need of CDR.
