Fashion giant H&M on Thursday announced it was suspending leather purchases from Brazil in response to the Amazon fires that have provoked a global outcry.

The ban comes after US-based VF Corporation, which owns a string of brands including Timberland, Vans and The North Face, announced late last month it would no longer buy leather from Brazil over concerns about the destruction of the world's largest rainforest.

H&M said it was imposing a temporary freeze on orders until it had confidence the leather was not causing "environmental harm".

"Due to the severe fires in the Brazilian part of the Amazon rainforest, and the connections to cattle production, we have decided to place a temporary ban on leather from Brazil," the Swedish clothing retail firm said in a statement to AFP.

"The ban will be active until there are credible assurance systems in place to verify that the leather does not contribute to environmental harm in the Amazon," it said.

The 347 scientists who collaborated to produce the world's first image of a black hole were honoured Thursday with the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, winning $3 million dollars for what is known as the "Oscars of science."

The Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration grabbed global headlines on April 10 when they published the first image of a supermassive black hole circled by a flame-orange halo of white-hot plasma.

Directed by Shep Doeleman at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, the team spent over a decade simulating an Earth-sized computational telescope that combined the signals received by eight radio telescopes working in pairs around the world with their sights trained on the Messier 87 (M87) galaxy, 55 million light-years away.

Through this technique, they were able to achieve an unprecedented resolution and observe the black hole's silhouette for the first time in history, confirming theoretical predictions about these celestial objects.

Winners from the other categories, life sciences, and mathematics, also took home $3 million.

They will be recognized at a gala awards ceremony on November 3, at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California.

South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday unveiled a raft of plans to tighten laws to fight r**e and murder of women as the nation reels from high profile murders in recent days.

"Violence against women has become more than a national crisis," he said in an address to the nation broadcast on national television and radio stations.

"It is a crime against our common humanity".

"Our nation is in mourning and pain. Over the past few days, our country has been deeply traumatised by acts of extreme violence perpetrated by men against women and children.

"These acts of violence have made us doubt the very foundation of our democratic society, our commitment to human rights and human dignity, to equality, to peace and to justice.

His address came after two consecutive days of protests in Cape Town, demanding an end to the scourge of r**e and murder of women.

*Pak🇵🇰 PM Issues Warning✉ Letter After 27 Ministers 👉Miss Deadlines: Report*

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has started seeking accountability from his Ministers, as his office issued a 'red letter' to 27 Ministries over their failure to submit reports.

This is the first time that Ministries have been sent the red letters, which is a kind of final warning to the Ministers to act.

The letter is also meant to show Imran Khan's displeasure towards the working of the Ministries.

According to the notification from Imran Khan's office, the letter was issued on account of critical delay in completion of composite tasks assigned under the Prime Minister's directives.

The office has now given the deadline of September 9 to submit information on issues like vacancies and postings at every level in the ministries.

The letter called for details on officers who are worthy of promotions but have not been promoted.

It has also sought information on those government officers against whom disciplinary investigations have been pending for three months. Besides this, Imran Khan has also asked for details about cars, machinery and other items that are not being used by the Ministries.

It is being held that the red letter will factor into the performance report of the concerned Ministry and its Divisions.

*BREAKING💥: Former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe Dies Aged 95😟*

Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe's first post-independence leader, has died at the age of 95.

He died after battling ill health, his family confirmed to the BBC. Mr Mugabe was ousted from power in a military coup in November 2017, ending his three-decade reign.

Zimbabwe's education secretary Fadzayi Mahere tweeted: "Rest In Peace, Robert Mugabe."

He was born on 21 February 1924, in what was then Rhodesia. He was imprisoned for more than a decade without trial after criticising the government of Rhodesia in 1964.

In 1973, while still in prison, he was chosen as president of the Zimbabwe African National Union (Zanu), of which he was a founding member.

Mr Mugabe, 95, was ousted in a military coup in November 2017, ending his 37-year-long reign.
