Why did you start?
I became involved as a parent when we moved to Canberra and my son started playing for GUFC U/8's and my husband joined a Masters 35s team. I then decided to start playing soccer when a contact through my husband's team was looking for one more last minute player to make a summer 9s team. I had never played before but, at the age of 44, I thought 'why not'?! One of the best decisions I have ever made!

Why are you passionate about females being involved in football?
I am passionate about anyone, males or females, being involved in any sport but I am particularly supportive of finding opportunities for females to be more active and represented in sport that they have an interest in. I have two daughters who now both play in the GUFC pathways program, aged 10 and 12, and I see the disappointment in their teams when they realise that they often do not have the same opportunities that the male teams have. I am very passionate about improving this imbalance and building those opportunities for the females who are wanting to be more involved in soccer. The benefits gained from team sport (skills, resilience and persistence), team friendships and the mentoring from coaches are so valuable for my girls as they develop into young adults.

What inspires you to play?
I am inspired to play because of the benefits I gain in terms of fitness, friendships and family bonding. All five members of my family play so we have regular kick arounds together which is great family fun. I love that we watch each other's games and support each other. It gives us a common interest to bond through and opens up conversations as we all share our soccer stories. I am inspired by the amazing women on my team who each have their stories and journeys but always come together to do their best on the field, and the support we offer each other is incredible to be a part of. I am not currently coaching, but in the past, it has been inspiring to coach the GUFC children, watch their skills develop and celebrate their achievements. I love seeing those children still playing each season and growing into incredible people!

What do you love about GUFC?
The people - my teammates, all the other families we have played with over the years, the friendly canteen volunteers and in particular the amazing coaches who volunteer their time each week to be fabulous mentors and role models for my children's teams. Playing soccer has allowed my family to be part of the larger GUFC 'soccer family' - it is always nice to be at the fields and see familiar faces and to watch the GUFC children grow up in the club. GUFC has provided a community that I feel very blessed to be a part of. It is a community that goes way beyond soccer.
