This week, we seized upon the opportunity to sit down with Sofia Aragon and Teresa Mosqueda, candidates running for the King County Council District 8 seat, being vacated by Joe McDermott. It was good to get to know them a bit and talk about their candidacy, the issues that face our community and what making the move from city to county service feels like. Sofia currently serves as Mayor of Burien and Teresa was elected to Seattle City Council in 2017 to represent the at-large position 8.

White Sunday is a holiday in Samoa that falls in the 2nd Sunday of October. It is a time to come together with brothers, sisters and cousins to recite a Bible passage together in front of the church. It is a tradition in all the Samoan Protestant churches.

Our guest is Kevin Hoang, senior at Evergreen High School who is Evergreen's A.S.B. President for the 2022-23 school year! Kevin is fun, good natured, creative and light hearted but is also equal parts, serious, intelligent and determined as you will find in his conversation with Christian Tautua and Frank Johnson!

Kevin loves EHS and White Center and has worked tirelessly this year to make the life he shares with his community, his schoolmates and his family better! We can't wait for you to meet him in this episode. He is a delight. Our hope is that Kevin will come back on the podcast in the coming years to let us know where he is and how he is changing the world because trust: he will change the world.

We are partnering with Seattle Vet Outreach and community members to put together a pop up Vet Clinic in White Center!

This event will be held on Feb 1, 2023 from 11am - 2pm at the TAF Bethaday Community Learning Center parking lot! You can’t miss us!

There will be a mix of free services and priced ones on a sliding scale. Walk ins are welcomed. We would love to see your pet babies there!

We partner in our programming so we wanted to approach our fundraising together as well, splitting the proceeds 3 ways! In a non-profit environment that is often times competitive we choose collaboration and believe in abundance not scarcity. You can encourage this way of thinking and acting by purchasing a ticket (or 5!).

Raffle each day - Dec 1, 2, 5-9, 13-16. We begin Thursday and we will be going live every day from somewhere in our community.

We discovered collectively we are serving over 2000 families - in a diversity of ways - family support, engaging with our local public schools, youth leadership development, community
organizing, academic mentoring, community arts (ie a community kids’ choir) AND probably the most important impact- helping heal our community thru creating connection (COVID did a number on all of us! Phew! ). The joy in the work is real even thru some tough times and there is a multiplying affect of committing to work together.

Highline voters agreed that it is time for a new Evergreen High School! There are two other schools (Tyee HS in SeaTac and Pacific Middle School in Des Moines) in the district that are on this bond that will also get rebuilt! Such great news!

As of election night, the Highline Schools Bond is passing at 66% (we needed 60% to pass).

Doorbelling, aka knocking on doors and talking directly to voters, is the most effective way to convince people to vote to APPROVE Proposition 1 to . We need 60% to win, and what we’ve seen in other elections is that doorbelling pushed them from 58% to the 60% needed to pass.

We have an Evergreen focused doorbelling day this Sat, 10/22 at 10am. We will meet in the Hick's Lake parking lot next to Cascade MS and then walk the streets of our 'hood and meet our neighbors together.

Isaiah Slattery and Kiya Cornelius are sophomores at Evergreen High School. Listening to them share their reflections about community, that "10th grade life", the construction of a new school and what it might take to get the bond passed in November is both, humbling and encouraging! We were all bowled over by their wit, good nature and intelligence! Our time with them serves as an excellent reminder of why it's vital and absolutely our responsibilty to invest in the lives and in the future of our youth!

You're invited to official launch of the 2022 Yes for Highline campaign to pass a school construction bond to rebuild Evergreen High School!

Join us Tue, 9/13 at 6pm at Highline HS. Meet our new superintendent Dr. Ivan Duran and hear from students, staff and alumni about why our schools need to be rebuilt.

After a short rally, take a tour of the new Highline HS (re-opened in 2021 and rebuilt using funds from the last bond). Highline HS was designed by Bassetti, the same architects that have designed the new Evergreen. Come and see what's possible for the students of White Center!
