UP government urges SC to direct CBI probe in Hathras case

NEW DELHI: The UP government on Tuesday urged the Supreme Court to direct a CBI probe into the alleged gang-r**e and death of a Dalit woman in Hathras, saying it will ensure that no vested interests is able to create a fake and false narrative with "oblique motives".

In an affidavit filed in response to a PIL, which has been listed for hearing before a bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde, the state government said it is important that the investigation is carried out by an independent central agency.

The Dalit teen had died of grievous injuries in a Delhi hospital on September 29, a fortnight after she was allegedly r***d at her village by four upper caste men.

The state government said investigation by the central agency would obviate hindrance being created by certain vested interests in the fair and impartial investigation.

A CBI probe will ensure that no vested interests will be able to create a fake and false narrative with oblique motives, the UP government said.

The affidavit said the state government has already requested the Central government to take over the investigation through CBI.

Besides the alleged gang-r**e case, the state government has also sought CBI probe into the FIR related to the alleged criminal conspiracy to spread caste conflict, instigating violence, incidents of vicious propaganda by sections of media and political interests.

Kanpur: Major fire breaks out in paint factor
KANPUR: A major fire broke out at a paint factory at Pachor road in Mandhana area under the limits of Bithoor police station on Monday afternoon.

More than half-a-dozen fire tenders have been rushed to the spot to bring the flame under control. No casualties have been reported so far.

Panic meanwhile prevailed and locals in nearby residential pockets evacuated their houses in a hurry as several loud explosions were heard and thick columns of smoke descended in the area.
Sources said a stray spark following a short circuit hit containers of inflammable chemicals at the paint factory, when the employees of the morning shift were to begin their duty, which may have triggered the blaze. Seeing the fire, several labourers rushed towards the factory's exit gate to save their lives.

Senior administrative, police and fire department officials rushed to the spot. Sources said the major portion of the factory was destroyed and the losses could run into several lakhs.

The fire might have started due to short circuit, but the exact cause of fire will be ascertained after thorough investigation, SP rural Brijesh Kumar Srivastava said.

The fire officials said paints and chemicals stored in huge quantities in the factory fed the fire and made it difficult for fire-tenders to control it quickly.
