Miami, FL (Monday, September 21, 2020) – Concacaf today conducted the official draw for Preliminary Round and Round of 16 matchups of the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf League. The tournament is set to kick off on October 20.

The draw, which was hosted by TV personalities Alejandro de la Rosa (TUDN) and Natalia Alvarez (ESPN), included appearances by Honduran football legend Amado Guevara and Concacaf General Secretary Philippe Moggio.

In order to fit the competition into a new schedule, the Preliminary Round and Round of 16 will be played as single game ties at the highest ranked club’s stadium. All other rounds will be played as two game ties (home and away).

The 12 clubs participating in the Preliminary Round of the competition have been divided into six pairings as follows (home club listed first):

Matchup #1: CD FAS (SLV) vs Managua FC (NCA)
Matchup #2: LD Alajuelense (CRC) vs Cibao FC (DOM)
Matchup #3: CD Municipal Limeño (SLV) vs Forge FC (CAN)
Matchup #4: CA Independiente (PAN) vs Antigua GFC (GUA)
Matchup #5: Arcahaie FC (HAI) vs Verdes FC (BLZ)
Matchup #6: FC Motagua (HON) vs Comunicaciones FC (GUA)

The six Preliminary Round matchups will be played October 20-22, as single game ties at the highest ranked club’s stadium.

The ten clubs seeded into the Round of 16 and the six Preliminary Round winners have been divided into eight parings and will play as follows (home team listed first):

Update on the Concacaf Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™

Concacaf has held recent discussions with its member associations, FIFA and other stakeholders as the confederation continues to plan for the resumption of its competitions across the region.

Following those discussions, Concacaf and FIFA have jointly agreed that the Concacaf Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 will not be played in the FIFA match windows of October or November 2020, and will instead begin with the first round in the FIFA match window of March 2021.

Many parts of the region continue to have very challenging public health situations, and that has been a key factor in this decision. Additionally, several countries across the confederation have travel restrictions and quarantine requirements, which would make international football involving 30 national teams extremely difficult.

Concacaf will now work with FIFA to finalize a new schedule, beginning with the first round in March 2021, which will be communicated in due course.

Concacaf has announced an exciting new format for the 2021 edition of the Concacaf Gold Cup, and the introduction of a first ever draw for the prestigious regional tournament.

The new set-up for Concacaf’s flagship competition will include a Preliminary Round prior to the 16 team Group Stage. The Preliminary Round will include 12 Member Associations competing for the final three spots in the Group Stage. It will be played as a direct elimination format, from July 2nd to July 6th, in a centralized location in the United States.

Additionally, a major change to the Knockout Phase, which follows the Group Stage, will see teams on opposite sides of the bracket meet from the Quarterfinals onwards. In previous Gold Cups, teams have only competed against opponents on the same side of the bracket until the Final. This change will provide more unpredictability and excitement to the competition, which was expanded from 12 to 16 teams for a hugely successful 2019 edition.

As part of the Confederation’s focus on continuing to deliver a football first philosophy, and to add more anticipation for fans across the region, a first ever Gold Cup draw will take place on September 28th, 2020. Both the Preliminary Round and the Group Stage will be drawn at the event, further details for which will follow in the coming weeks.

An initial 12 teams booked their place in the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup Group Stage, which will commence on July 10th, 2021, through their performances in the inaugural Concacaf Nations League (CNL).

They include the winners and runners-up in CNL League A groups, and the winners of CNL League B groups, including Canada, Costa Rica, Curacao, El Salvador, Grenada, Honduras, Jamaica, Martinique, Mexico, Panama, Suriname and USA.

The 12 teams will be joined in the group stage by AFC Asian Cup Champions, Qatar, who will compete as a guest as part of a major collaboration between Concacaf and the host country of the FIFA World Cup 2022™.

Gold Cup Preliminary Round

The Preliminary Round will comprise the 12 national teams who qualified through their CNL performances, including the third placed teams from League A groups, the second placed teams from League B groups, and the winners of League C groups. Those teams are Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Cuba, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Montserrat, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago.

After a knockout format involving the 12 national teams, the remaining three teams at the end of the Preliminary Round will qualify for the Gold Cup Group Stage.

2020 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League

The Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League was suspended at the quarterfinal stage, with 11 matches remaining to conclude the region’s flagship men’s club competition.

Concacaf remains in discussions with the leagues, clubs and stakeholders involved and is working on a range of options, including the possibility of centralizing the remaining ties in one city.

The Confederation is committed to concluding the 2020 Concacaf Champions League and crowning a regional champion. The winner will also qualify as the Concacaf representative at the FIFA Club World Cup.

A further update on a schedule and format to resume this competition will be communicated in due course.

La contingencia ha llevado a que la Concacaf deba modificar su clasificatoria rumbo al Mundial de Qatar 2022 y en lugar de la tradicional eliminatoria con seis selecciones se tendría una nueva con ocho.

De acuerdo con diversas fuentes, este lunes el organismo confirmará el formato. Los cinco mejor ubicados en el ranking FIFA (México, Estados Unidos, Costa Rica, Honduras y Jamaica) tendrían su pase automático.

Los tres boletos restantes los disputarían las 30 selecciones restantes en una fase previa a disputarse desde octubre de este año hasta marzo de 2021.

The senior men's national football team may return to camp in early August to resume preparations for the next FIFA World Cup qualifiers, even though Concacaf has not released a game schedule.

President Michael Ricketts told The Gleaner that the Jamaican Football Federation (JFF) cannot risk being caught off guard if qualifying can take place this year. This means that the technical committee prepares local players to start training.

"Concacaf did not announce when they started [qualifying]," said Ricketts. "But based on a statement from the FIFA doctor, no international matches will be played before January. But we could very well start qualifying at the end of this year or at the beginning of next year. And because we are not sure, we want to be as prepared as possible.

Un país ya inició el proceso de afiliación a la FIFA y podría integrar la Concacaf

Las selecciones centroamericanas podrían sumar un nuevo rival para las próximas eliminatorias. Será un extraño rival debido a que su cultura es muy europea y hasta forman parte de un país del viejo continente, pero integrarían la Concacaf. Otro extraño integrante de la Confederación que podría sumarse en estos años.

El país en cuestión es Groenlandia, que inició el proceso para afiliarse a la FIFA y así tener el aval para competir en los torneos profesionales. En principicio, territorialmente pertenece al continente americano y, por eso, competiría con las selecciones de Centroamérica y el Caribe, pero la polémica recién empieza.

Nuestras competencias de clubes dependen de la reanudación de multiples ligas y debido a que algunas permanecen en una posición incierta, hemos tomado la decisión de posponer el inicio de la Liga Concacaf Scotiabank 2020, que estaba programada para comenzar el 28 de julio.

Continuaremos trabajando con nuestras Asociaciones Miembro, Ligas y otras partes interesadas propuestas para que la Liga Concacaf Scotiabank pueda comenzar en los próximos meses.
