Going forward into the new year, we take a moment to remember those we have lost in the line of duty. Together with all who protect our public lands, visitors, employees, the natural & historic objects, and the wildlife that calls these precious places home, we give our sincere gratitude. To the surviving families of those lost in the line of duty, our deepest condolences.

On New Year's Day 2012, the National Park Service lost a dedicated ranger and colleague when US Park Ranger Margaret Anderson was fatally shot in the line of duty on the road to the Paradise area in Mount Rainier National Park. Her heroic actions ultimately prevented a gunman from reaching Paradise on that busy winter day. Ranger Anderson was a commissioned law enforcement officer with a passion for Emergency Medical Services and fire response. "She was one of the few," say her park coworkers, "who are ready to risk their own lives to protect the lives of others. We continue to mourn her loss and celebrate her life."

The Valor Memorial in Mount Rainier National Park honors Ranger Anderson and three other rangers who made the ultimate sacrifice while saving the lives of others – visit the memorial in person or online at www.nps.gov/mora/learn/news/valor-memorial.htm

Can you help identify those responsible for suspected arson fire in Great Smoky Mountains National Park? – go.nps.gov/RichMtnFire

US Park Rangers are requesting the public’s help in identifying those responsible for the start of the Rich Mountain Fire in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Park officials say the initial investigation indicates that two fires were intentionally started on November 20 in the Rich Mountain area – during high wind conditions, a red flag warning, and a park-wide burn ban.

The Rich Mountain Fire was reported on November 20 around 2:30 pm near the intersection of Old Cades Cove Road and Rich Mountain Road. The fire prompted an early-morning voluntary evacuation of homes near the park boundary on November 21. Personnel from multiple agencies have since fully contained the fire.

“Intentionally setting fires in the park, except in designated rings or picnic areas, is always illegal and is extremely dangerous, especially under the extreme weather conditions we saw this week,” said the park's Chief Ranger. “We are asking visitors and neighbors for help as we work to identify those responsible for this suspected arson.”

A white truck was seen at the Rich Mountain trailhead on November 20 around 10 a.m. This vehicle may not be involved in the incident, but the occupants may have seen something and have information that can assist the investigation. Information from visitors is often very helpful to investigators. If you have information that could help identify those responsible for this suspected arson, the park asks you to please submit a tip. A financial award may be available for validated tips You don’t have to tell us who you are, but please tell us what you know:

is a time to bring attention to the acts of violence committed against Indigenous people, particularly women and children. American Indian and Alaska Native people are at a disproportionate risk of experiencing violence, murder, or going missing. According to the Department of Justice, American Indian and Alaska Native women are missing and murdered at a rate of more than 10 times the national average.

Throughout the week, people are encouraged to wear red as a symbol of the loss of sacred lifeblood through violence, and to remember and honor the missing and murdered Indigenous peoples crisis. The National Park Service is part of an all-of-government effort to bring attention and action to missing and murdered Indigenous people. America‘s national parks are part of and surrounded by many Indigenous communities. As part of this observance, you may see National Park Service staff wearing red shawls. Find ways to help and join in at go.nps.gov/redshawl

The Missing and Murdered Unit within the U.S. Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services (BIA-OJS) investigates missing and murdered cases in pursuit of justice for those impacted by violence, and provides resources to prioritize these cases to ensure that the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous peoples is addressed. Take a hike.

No, really. Like right now. Why not? You're at work? It's cold?

No excuses. With more than 21,000 combined miles of trails, there are plenty of options to stretch your legs in national parks. Hiking is also proven to have many health benefits, ranging from the physical exercise you get when out on the trail, to the emotional or mental relief that comes from being in nature. Unless you're being chased by a bear (hmm, cardio workout is amazing) or just don't like the great outdoors. We do offer plenty of activities for indoor hikes too.

UPDATE November 17: US Park Rangers of Big Bend National Park, in collaboration with personnel from partner agencies, are pleased to report a successful search and rescue operation. The missing hiker was located and transported to an area hospital.

The park thanks the dedicated search and rescue team, partnering law enforcement agencies, and the local community for their unwavering support throughout the operation.

Additional thanks to those of you who submitted tips to assist in the search for the missing hiker.

Previous post November 16: Search underway for missing hiker in Big Bend National Park – go.nps.gov/1g6q7e

US Park Rangers are seeking tips from the public to aid in the search for Christy Perry, a hiker who has been reported missing. Perry is a 25-year-old female, 5'02" tall, 100 pounds with brown hair.

Park officials say that Perry picked up a rental car in Midland, Texas, on November 8th and parked at Lost Mine Trailhead on November 9th. No show for a camping reservation on November 9th.

Information from other day hikers and backpackers is often extremely valuable. If you were hiking the Lost Mine Trail on November 8th or 9th and may have seen Perry, or if you have information that could help locate her, the park asks you to please submit a tip:
