The care homes for older people market has demonstrated significant growth, reaching an annualised value of £27.3 billion in 2025/26. In recent years, growth has been driven largely by care home fee inflation, pushed up by National Living Wage uplifts and the broader inflationary spike in 2022/23.

As the market continues to evolve, LaingBuisson's Care Homes for Older People UK Market Report provides the in-depth insights you need to navigate the landscape. Now in its 36th edition, this report continues to provide trusted, independent sector analysis on the market, covering key elements such as cost uplifts and regional pricing differentials. The report provides a data-driven overview for those looking to improve their operations or invest in this dynamic sector of social care.

With the NLW rise now in effect, what does this mean for care home services?

An increase in the NLW means an increase in staffing costs. An increase in staffing costs means an increase in total service costs. But does this translate to an increase in local authority commissioning fees, and local authorities paying a ‘Fair Cost of Care’? LaingBuisson’s latest Care Cost Benchmarks toolkit analysis reveals it does not in many cases.

The analysis reveals that an overall fee shortfall between what councils pay for residential and nursing care home services and operator costs still exists, but not as much as in previous years. This is due to the fact that many councils have raised their fees in real terms. However, ‘care gaps’ drastically vary across the country, despite there being signs of the gap closing as a whole.

If you’re interested in independent, trusted and nuanced intelligence about the current adult social care cost analysis environment, explore the Care Cost Benchmarks toolkit now:

Essential toolkit for care home cost analysis. Learn about real costs, funding gaps, and data insights to support better decision-making.
