We just published a new article exploring the narrative of progress, where the current narrative falls catastrophically short, what authentic progress would entail and require, and specific suggestions for how it could be realized.

Our background narratives about progress can play a profound role in creating the biases that shape our assessments of new technologies and where the world is headed.

We are not throwing out the idea of progress here, but exploring what a full definition of progress would involve, in service of making that real.

Its long, more like a short book than an article, but an important topic for anyone who cares about the future.

The concept of progress is at the heart of humanity’s story. From the present, it is possible to imagine a future of abundance in which our great challenges have been addressed by the unique human ability to modify the universe toward our own ends. Many believe that we will attain this future thro...

This week, we published a critical piece to explain how technology shapes human values and the implications for a future that will include AI, automation, and virtual reality. We stand on the brink of a range of possible outcomes. How we plan for the deeper impacts of tech will determine the kind of future we create.

How should we design technologies that in turn shape our minds?

In our latest feature, we seek to describe how bad faith communication has become normalized, and the risks this poses to democracies.

Societies decline into violence when mutual distrust and disrespect continually undermine any possibility of mutual understanding.

Therefore, we must seek to restore faith in the power of those forms of communication that allow us to change positions, learn, and improve our thinking and coordinated action around essential shared realities.

Reversing the downward spiral of mutual distrust.

"Facts become weapons for use in politically charged discourses in which winning is more important than accurately representing larger and more complex truths."

In our latest feature, we seek to describe the crucial nexus that digital technologies, education, and politics play and how they can be reconfigured to allow for widespread learning and mutual understanding.
