President Bola Tinubu has officially enacted a law that grants judicial office holders a remarkable 300% increase in their salaries.

The bill concerning the salaries and allowances of judicial office holders, approved by the Senate in June, will enable the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) to receive an annual salary of N64 million.

BREAKING: FG pays NiMet workers’ 45-month minimum wage arrears

The Federal Government has paid the outstanding 45-month minimum wage arrears owed to employees of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.

This was revealed in a statement issued on Monday by the Secretary of NiMet Union Joint Action Committee, Okechukwu Nwokoro.

The unpaid arrears, which date back to 2019, had been a source of tension between NiMet management and its staff, leading to frequent clashes with labour unions.

Before I tell you the whole story, here is what I need you all to understand.

It’s always surprising to me when people say, “P-SQUARE is always bringing their family matters into the public eye.” Let me clarify this. P-SQUARE is not just a family - it’s a public brand, but Peter, Paul, Jude, Anita, Ifeoma, Lola, and the rest of our family members are FAMILY, but P-SQUARE is an entity that belongs to the public as much as it does belong to us. Our fans have played a significant role in our success, so they have the right to know what’s happening with their beloved brand P-SQUARE. That’s why it’s understandable when certain aspects of our lives are shared publicly.

Now, let's get straight to the point. I want to make it clear that I never reported my twin brother PAUL to the EFCC. I know many of you were disappointed when PAUL accused me of doing so. He mentioned that I wrote a petition against him, which he claimed made the EFCC to ask him to provide a surety. This statement suggested that he was detained, which is not true.

Peter, Paul and Jude own a management company together called Northside Entertainment, which we use to manage all of P-SQUARE’s affairs. One day, I discovered another company with a similar name, but this one was called Northside Music instead of Northside Entertainment.

This surprised me, so I decided to investigate further and guess what? To my shock the founders and directors of this secret company were none other than JUDE Okoye and his wife Ifeoma Okoye and the registered address was the family home of JUDE’s wife.

Still in shock, I knew I had to talk to PAUL about it. I approached him multiple times - at least four different times - asking if he knew anything about this secret company and the whereabouts of some of P-SQUARE’s royalties. Each time I met with him, he denied knowing anything about it.

I want to set the record straight, I hereby challenge PAUL, or anyone else to show any petition that I, Peter Okoye, ever submitted against my twin brother PAUL or that has PAUL’S name on it.

I am still writing this with so much shock because I gave clear instructions to my legal team, with a standing order, that under no circumstances should Paul be included in my petition. Their focus was to remain solely on the primary suspects, Jude Okoye and his wife, Ifeoma Okoye - since they were the directors of this secret company. Northside Music
PAUL’S recent interview about the EFCC incident contains a lot of lies.

I watched and listened to Paul's interview, I was totally speechless and I kept asking myself, how does Paul have the audacity to publicly tell lies like this, even with a respected and reputable agency like the EFCC. He claimed I petitioned him, but that’s not something that ever happened to PAUL. The truth is, this was something that actually happened to JUDE.

The real story goes back to the shocking discovery I made, but what really got me very upset was finding out that for years, millions of dollars and hundreds of millions of Naira were being secretly diverted into this secret company’s account Northside Music from our own company, "Northside Entertainment." This was not just a minor issue - it was a massive betrayal that had been going on for several years.

I understand that Paul is angry because I took this matter to the EFCC, and I understand why. However, bearing in mind that I have met Paul and Jude separately and tried to discuss this matter and it yielded me with no positive answer, in fact, the last time I approached Paul the conversation got heated up and he said, and I quote, "Peter, go and do your worst" at this stage I was left with no other choice but to report to the authorities and take legal actions.

JUDE was then detained after being questioned. He came clean and admitted he had been diverting millions of dollars of our money to this secret company that he and his wife were the director of. All of JUDE’s bank accounts were immediately frozen. He was eventually released on bail after he managed to provide a surety and met the other bail conditions. Meanwhile, further investigations are still going on up until now.

PAUL’S name was never mentioned in the petition because he was never a director of this secret company, unless there is something he is hiding from all of us. PAUL was only invited for questioning just like Jason Njoku of Iroko TV, Amaju Pinnick, and others who had transactional dealings with Northside Music.

The EFCC investigation found out that Northside Music had been secretly collecting P-SQUARE's royalties over the years. These royalty money were sent to a bureau de change, then transferred to JUDE’s personal bank account.

A closer look at Jude's account statement revealed that once the money entered his personal account, there were multiple transactions where he was splitting the funds equally with Paul, without Peter. This naturally led to some questions.

After Jude confessed to diverting the funds, he also told the EFCC that the money he had been sending to Paul for several years, wasn’t about sharing money behind Peter’s back, instead, it was money he owed Paul from the sale of their house in America, which he was gradually paying back the loan. This is the reason why Paul has been telling everyone that the EFCC has cleared him, as if I ever wanted him to get into trouble with the EFCC.

The story is very long, but I will tell it all in due time. For now, I will stop here until the EFCC sends the final report to my legal team. Once that happens, before heading to the law court, I will make the exact petition that doesn’t include PAUL’s name public. I will also release the EFCC final report, receipts, and other documents related to this secret company, including the CAC registration, bank transactions, and bank statements that JUDE set up with his wife, Ifeoma Okoye. May God help us all.

Manchester United's signings this season are incredible. Almost everything Ten Hag needed or requested has arrived.

Yesterday, Manchester United officially completed deals for two Bayern Munich players: Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt and Moroccan right-back Noussair Mazraoui.

- De Ligt joined United for €45 million plus €5 million in add-ons.
- Mazraoui joined United for €15 million plus €5 million in add-ons.

Additionally, the club has also signed promising French defender Lenny Yoro from Lille and promising Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna.

It's true that Yoro is injured, and people might connect his injury with the signing of De Ligt as a replacement, but the fact is De Ligt was part of United's plans from the beginning.

I want to mention that Manchester United’s transfer window isn't over yet, and the club is expected to make more signings in the remaining days.

Currently, the name being circulated is Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona. It seems Ten Hag is bringing in the players he managed at Ajax.

With these signings, expectations for the season have risen significantly compared to what was initially anticipated from Ten Hag. The management has shown faith in him and brought in the reinforcements he wanted.

Failure in this case is unlikely to be acceptable, and I think United fans are excited about their new team, especially after a good performance in the Community Shield.

Trouble As Immigration invites woman who tore Nigerian passport at MMIA

The Nigeria Immigration Service NIS on Monday said it has launched a formal investigation following the circulation of a video on social media, showing a female traveller destroying a Nigerian Standard Passport at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

Service Public Relations Officer, DCI Kenneth Udo disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja.

He said the individual has been identified and invited for further investigation.
“If the allegations are substantiated, her actions would have constituted a breach of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended), with corresponding penalties outlined under Section 10(h) of the same Act.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the provisions of the Immigration Act in the interest of national security, and to preserving the dignity and integrity of the nation’s legal instruments”, he stated.

Ebonyi State Govt. announces plans to secure commercial airplanes

The Ebonyi State Government has announced plans to acquire commercial airplanes as part of its strategy to boost the growth and operational efficiency of the state-owned Chuba Okadigbo International Airport.
This disclosure is contained in a statement issued by the Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Leo Ekene Oketa, on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
Oketa stated that Governor Francis Nwifuru and the Executive Council have authorized the Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Elechi Elechi Nnannia, to begin negotiations with contractors interested in supplying the aircraft.

This move is likely tied to the state’s broader vision of launching its own airline, similar to Akwa Ibom’s Ibom Air.
“In another move to further explore opportunities for the maximum growth and operations of the state-of-the-art airport, the Governor, His Excellency, , and EXCO approved for the Hon. Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Elechi Elechi Nnannia, to proceed and negotiate with contractors seeking to supply commercial airplanes for Ebonyi State,” the statement read in part.

Furthermore, the statement noted that the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Aviation, Dr. Mrs. Ngozi Obichukwu, announced that the process of marking the newly asphalted runway at the Chuba Okadigbo International Airport has been completed.
She also mentioned that there are still some minor clearances from relevant agencies and additional work that need to be finished, but these are expected to be completed soon.
What You Should Know
Earlier this year, the Ebonyi State Government, through the Commissioner for Aviation, Dr. Mrs. Ngozi Obichukwu, unveiled ambitious plans to launch a state-owned airline, drawing inspiration from Akwa Ibom State’s successful Ibom Air.

Dr. Obichukwu had announced that the Ebonyi State Government intends to procure four aircraft to kick-start this new airline, with additional contributions from investors who are ready to provide three more aircraft.
In addition to these plans, the Ebonyi State Government has made significant investments in rehabilitating the 3.5-kilometer runway at the Chuba Okadigbo International Airport. This effort is part of a broader strategy to enhance the airport’s growth and operational efficiency, preparing it not only for passenger flights but also for cargo operations.
According to the latest update from Dr. Obichukwu, the runway rehabilitation has been fully completed, including the necessary markings.

However, she noted that a few minor clearances from relevant agencies and some additional work still remain, but these are expected to be finalized in the near future. This progress marks a significant step forward in Ebonyi State’s aviation aspirations, laying the groundwork for a robust, state-operated airline.

President Tinubu To Governors: The N573 billion fund given to you is not a grant but loan from World Bank, spend wisely

The presidency yesterday cleared the air on the controversy over the N573 billion received by states.

It said the fund is a World Bank loan, which the federal government guaranteed, and not a grant.

It explained that the issue of whether it was a grant or a loan should not be at the centre of discussion but rather how the money can assist in the country’s development.

The clarification was made through a Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi.

He said: “I think the issue is not whether it is a loan or grant.

“The point, as clearly stated in the president’s broadcast, is that the states got money.

“The amount, which is the second tranche under the COVID-19 livelihoods support scheme under the NG-CARES Programme funded by the World Bank, is N570 billion.

“The fact is states are getting needed support and funding to improve the lives of the people.

“The World Bank facility is guaranteed by the federal government because every multilateral loan must have a sovereign guarantee.

“This means the loan will be repaid by the federal government in case the sub-nationals are unable to.

“There should be no hue and cry by any governor really if the objective is to serve the people and make life better for the masses.

“The president is elected to make life better for citizens the same way the governors are elected to do the same in their respective states.

“President Tinubu will continue to work to expand the economy and enable shared prosperity for all Nigerians.

“He considers the governors as partners in progress and the job of nation-building.

“What can’t be denied is that the states have more resources to deliver better service to the people, especially in critical areas of education, healthcare, security and physical infrastructure like roads among others.”

Ajayi described the issue as more than just semantics, explaining that the payment was the second tranche, with the first paid in October or November last year.

“I think the issue here is one or two governors trying to reduce the matter to semantics. It is much more than that.

“The fact remains that the federal government paid the states the money and the N573 billion is actually the second tranche.

“The first tranche was paid sometime in October or November last year,” he said.

WAEC Withholds 11.9% Results Over Malpractice, Nearly 74% Obtained Credits In At Least 5 Subjects

SaharaReporters earlier reported that the regional examination body on Monday morning released the results of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination across Nigeria.

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has withheld results of 215,267 candidates (representing 11.92 percent of the total) in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that the regional examination body on Monday morning released the results of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination across Nigeria.
This was announced by the examination body via its X handle, urging all the candidates to visit their official website to check their results.
“The West African Examinations Council is pleased to inform Candidates who sat WASSCE for School Candidates, 2024 that the result has officially been released today, Monday, August 12, 2024,” WAEC announced.

A total of 1,814,736 candidates from 25,126 secondary schools across Nigeria registered for the examination, with 1,805,216 taking the exam. As for the results, 1,685,889 candidates (93.39%) have had all their papers processed and released, while 119,327 candidates (6.61%) are still awaiting the processing of some subjects.
According to Amos Josiah Dangut, the head of WAEC Nigeria, the results of 215,267 candidates (11.92% of the total) have been withheld due to alleged examination malpractice.
This represents a 4.37% decrease from the 16.29% recorded in the 2023 WASSCE for school candidates. Meanwhile, a performance analysis reveals that 1,332,089 candidates (73.79%) achieved credits in at least five subjects, including or excluding English and/or Mathematics.
A total of 1,301,941 candidates (representing 72.12 percent) obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
Year-on-year comparison for this category reveals that the 2024 WASSCE saw a 7.69 percent decrease from the 79.81 percent pass rate recorded in 2023.

Despite the official announcement, thousands of students are facing difficulties in accessing their results as the WAEC website continues to display the message "results yet to be uploaded", leaving them frustrated and uncertain about their performance.
“I’m trying to check my result it’s not working,” one of the students, Mariana Joshua commented.
“It's not yet uploaded on the WAEC website as announced. I just checked,” Adewunmi Oluseye tweeted.
Confirming Adewunmi’s statement, Sly wrote: “Yea you're right. Just checked one now and not on the website yet.”
“I just checked using the exam card but it's still showing not available,” Olayemi Judi said.

Judge who Gave Order Restricting Protesters To Abuja Stadium Hails From Wike’s Hometown

Wike is Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State governor.

Rights activist and lawyer, Chidi Odinkalu has stated that the lawyer who gave the order restricting protesters to the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja hails from Nyesom Wike’s hometown in Rivers state.
Wike is Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State governor.
In a post on X on Sunday, Odinkalu, a Professor of Practice in International Human Rights Law at the Fletcher School at Tufts University, said, “I didn't really want to be the person saying it but the judge who gave the order to kettle protesters in the Moshood Abiola Stadium just happened to come from the same village as the Minister of the FCT, the plaintiff. Calculate the odds!”

Justice S.C Oriji gave the order restricting protesters to the national stadium from the earlier planned Eagles Square in Abuja.

Checks by SaharaReporters show that S.C. Oriji hails from Obio/Akpor local government area of Rivers state and was appointed into the FCT High Court, Abuja in 2003.
Checks show that Wike also hails from the same local government area.
The Federal High Court in Abuja gave the order that restricted protesters to the stadium after a suit brought forward by the FCT Minister, through an ex-parte motion.
The judge in his ruling granted the minister’s prayer for an order directing the police and other security agencies to provide the protesters “adequate protection within the Moshood Abiola Stadium Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, throughout the period of the planned protest from 1st of August to 10th of August”.

The judge asked that the order be served on the organisers through publication on print and online media.

Presidency Spends N20Million To Decorate 300-Capacity Hall For Event

However, the specific event hosted by the Presidency that required this decoration expense remains unclear.

A review of the public payment portal, Govspend, shows the Nigerian Presidency made a payment of N19.98 million to Rock of Ages Total Events Limited on July 5, 2024, for the "full-scale decoration of Sheraton Hotel for a 300-capacity event."
However, the specific event hosted by the Presidency that required this decoration expense remains unclear.
The government incurred an additional expense of N57.8 million for catering services provided during the Presidential dinner anniversary on June 12th, with the payment made to Regal Limited on July 5th.

This expenditure is linked to the Democracy Day celebration held at the State Banquet Hall in the Presidential Villa, where the Presidency hosted a dinner event.

The State House has faced criticism for paying N19.98 million into the personal account of Adi Cynthia Ada on July 13, 2024, for the replacement of "worn-out entertainment" items.
This transaction has raised concerns as it contradicts the Tinubu administration's professed dedication to transparency and accountability, particularly regarding the use of public funds.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government had disbursed over N809 million in humanitarian interventions and other purposes into individual bank accounts, according to data from the (link unavailable) portal.
An investigation by SaharaReporters revealed that the funds were distributed in more than 65 transactions, violating legal requirements.
The payments were made under various guises, including engagement of Internally Displaced Persons, needs assessment for humanitarian interventions, technical dialogue proposals, rent renewals, stipends, and others.

Hypocrisy Galore — Miss South Africa Is A Playing Field For Cheap Xenophobic Exploits And Ugly Spectacles

The Miss South Africa event at the weekend was an exercise in hypocrisy — by the politicians who bullied a young woman; the Home Affairs Ministry, which stoked the fires of prejudice; and the organisers of the pageant, who surely enjoyed the publicity that this ugly controversy elicited. At the centre is how we define ourselves as South Africans and our country as part of Africa.

Last week, the Patriotic Alliance, led by the minister of sport, arts and culture, Gayton McKenzie, publicly claimed that 23-year-old Chidimma Adetshina did not qualify for the finals of the Miss South Africa beauty pageant.
This was because both of her parents were not born in South Africa. Later, the home affairs minister, the DA’s Leon Schreiber, issued a statement confirming that his department was investigating whether Adetshina’s mother had committed fraud in 2001.

To his credit, he said that Adetshina had played no part in any wrongdoing — she was an infant in 2001.
The PA then approached a court, arguing that Adetshina should not compete in the competition, and she withdrew from it.

It is hard to escape the sense that the PA and its leaders, McKenzie and Kenny Kunene, are guilty of plain bullying here. They would have known, and not cared, that this would cause Adetshina pain even as she has played no part in our public life or committed any wrongdoing in connection with her legal citizenship.
If it turns out that she was not legally granted South African citizenship she would not be the first — former DA MP Phumzile van Damme found out through a very difficult and public process that she had been born in Eswatini, while official documents had proclaimed that she was born in Mbombela.
Other politicians have found themselves in a similar position. In Australia, 15 MPs were found to be occupying their office illegally after it emerged that they held dual citizenship.
Targets of xenophobia
Our current political situation is such that issues around identity and nationality are likely to be contested in many ways for some time.
Only about 3% of the people living in South Africa are from other countries.

However, the fact they are visible and may have higher levels of economic activity than many South Africans has made them targets of xenophobia.
Perhaps the first public figure to use xenophobia for political gain was Herman Mashaba while he was DA mayor of Joburg.
He was followed by the PA, the ATM and several other parties.
Even the DA once claimed it would make the issue of immigration a major part of its election manifesto, but then stepped back from doing so. It was their home affairs minister who made a public statement.
While Schreiber may have felt he had no choice in going public with the decision to investigate Adetshina’s citizenship, this could well blow up in his face.
It could be that Adetshina’s mother lied when she was registered. Or that she, in good faith, asked someone else to register her child (perhaps through an agent or agency) who then lied to her.
As the immigration lawyer Stefanie de Saude-Darbandi wrote this weekend, there have been many cases when officials have given citizenship applicants the wrong advice. She pointed out that it would be impossible for any foreign national to break the law without the connivance of a South African Home Affairs official.
It may be impossible to prove what happened. Schreiber might well be asked why he decided to make a public statement if it turns out there was no wrongdoing. Without his statement, Adetshina could argue that she may have won the contest.
Nationality and the law
This gets to the heart of very difficult questions about nationality and the law.

The Department of Home Affairs — and its counterparts around the world — is at the centre of so many controversies because it is the department where human behaviour, such as sexual identity, falling in love, having children and moving around the world in a non-binary way, has to be defined in a binary way under the law.
But to judge, or in any way change the way you treat a person because of where they were born is the height of absurdity and prejudice.
Our grandchildren might one day find it as difficult to understand why people were treated so differently based on where they were born, as do many young children to understand racism today.
This is also a useful reminder of the southern African experience of nationality.
Since long before the colonial era, people have moved around southern Africa. The discovery of diamonds in what is now Kimberley and then the gold rush in what is now Gauteng led to a huge movement of people into what is now South Africa.
The upshot was that some people who were born in other countries played an immense role in our history and some people born here played major roles in the history of other countries.
For example, the ANC leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Albert Luthuli was born in Zimbabwe; the founder of the National Union of Mineworkers, James Motlatsi, was from Lesotho; and the late Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe’s wife Grace Mugabe was born in Benoni, as was the Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron. Springbok prop Tendai Mtawarira, known to the rugby world as “The Beast”, was born in Zimbabwe.

It seems strange to suggest to voters that people from other countries must be treated differently, while our government has publicly celebrated the success of the Ndlovu Youth Choir in a television competition called America’s Got Talent.
Jean Ping, who had a Chinese father, was the chair of the African Union Commission. In the UK, the fact that a former prime minister, the current mayor of London, and the immediate past leader of the Scottish National Party were all of Asian descent has been rightly celebrated as proof that ethnic identity should not be a factor in anyone’s life.
Such are the vagaries of the legalities of citizenship that at least six pairs of brothers have played football for the national teams of different countries.
Miss SA organisers
Unfortunately, politicians are not the only hypocrites in the Miss South Africa debacle.
The Miss South Africa organisers was one of the groups who first approached the Department of Home Affairs asking for clarity about Adetshina’s citizenship. While they might say this was out of concern or because they were determined to ensure no law was broken, they should have known that the controversy would bring much more attention to their event.
The fact that the event was held over the Women’s Day long weekend suggests an attempt to link beauty with the value of a woman.
Such a claim defies rationality, but this is an organisation with a long history of hypocrisy.
In 2021, it proclaimed that its acceptance of a contestant who identified as transgender was proof it was inclusive.
However, just a year before, its rules stated: “The applicant shall not ever have been married, nor had a marriage annulled… Miss South Africa titleholders are also required to remain unmarried throughout their reign… It is accepted that while an applicant may be in a committed relationship or engaged, they must adhere to the rule of not getting married … during the year of reign.”
They were also not allowed to become pregnant or to be the legal guardian of a child.
Irrational
There is no rational reason for these requirements — if the objective is to assess “beauty”, what possible influence could a contestant’s marital status have? And why would it be such a mortal sin to become pregnant?
This is in complete defiance of the reality of our society, where many young women find themselves the de facto parents of young children through no choice of their own. Without the incredible efforts of these young women, hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of young children would be left uncared for.
While the Miss South Africa competition may claim to be inclusive, over the years it has appeared to ensure that the winner has not been married, a parent, pregnant, short or skinny.
It has no bearing on our country or the lived existence of almost everybody in SA.
The furore over Adetshina has been closely watched in Nigeria, where politicians have been rightly concerned about xenophobia against their people in South Africa.
One of the responses was from the Miss Universe Nigeria competition inviting Adetshina to be a part of their contest.
While the rules of participation in that pageant are not clear on its website, it seems unlikely that contestants who have already qualified will welcome this. This appears to be an attempt to benefit from the controversy.
Even the Puebla International Literature Festival in Mexico said it had rescinded South Africa’s status as the Country in Focus as a result of this furore.
It says this is a statement against injustice.
Its organisers had conferred this status on our nation despite our unjust inequality and the appearance that it supports Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Somehow, the organisers of the event decided that this furore over a young beauty contestant was more unjust than anything else our government had done before.
Beauty pageants are magnets for hypocrisy. For people who watch them, they are an exercise in confirming their own biases, an opportunity to claim that their “standards of beauty” are correct.
Like xenophobia, this debacle holds nothing of value for anyone.
