This was an unexpected piece. Originally, we were interested in speaking with because of the things he does outside of his legendary restaurant, Joe Beef. Fred is a painter, a philosopher and a tinkerer. He’s the closest thing we have experienced to a mad genius (emphasis on the genius). Our friend worked for Fred for many years as a cook. During that time, through talking about fishing, music and food, they formed a friendship. Fred would often ask Will when he planned to pen the Great Canadian Fishing novel. We asked Will if he would be interested in interviewing Fred for Bellyache and talk about fishing and painting. What we captured at the end of the day was something altogether different, a moving, deeply personal conversation between two men coping with flaws, hardships and using community to persevere.

One night last summer, while we were drinking beers with Matt Perrin — pitching him on contributing to this project, we timidly brought up the idea of working with a friend of his, . As an illustrator Joel has quietly been making a name for himself, designing iconic logos and creating illustrations for Montreal restaurants like Vin Papillion, Beba and Liverpool House. In Toronto, his work is all over the now legendary restaurant, Dreyfus. “Joel will be down for sure” Matt promised. Lucky for us, he was right! We’re honoured to share with you an original illustration Joel created for a piece written by Will Weston in collaboration with Fred Morin. Stay tuned for the full feature — chock-full of vitamin R.

A woman of elegance and leisure, is the epitome of style and substance. A lot of people talk about having taste — Ariana embodies it. Seriously, from curated vintage garments to hand-painted pottery and luxurious glassware, if she’s into it — then it’s good. As an artist, she uses gouache and digital illustration to explore concepts of comfort, community and the human form. Personally, we love her illustrations of food, like this one that accompanies NYC-based pastry chef, recipe for a celeriac gratin tart in our upcoming first issue. Stay tuned!

This piece, entitled Capable of Embodiment, is from artist Mary MacIsaac’s series, Elements of Happiness — the opening feature in Bellyache's first issue. Her series is a collection of meaningful works made over the course of the last year. Using found media, Mary's collages offer reflections on poignant moments of grief, resilience and personal growth.

We first came across on a 2017 trip to Hong Kong. We picked up a copy of Oodles of Noodles, an illustrated diary of her travels in Japan told through noodle dishes she ate and liked, at in Wan Chai. Pearl’s evocative, food-centric style was a natural match for the powerful imagery conjured up by writer Maya Hey in her piece for Bellyache, Joy Too Soon. Check out the full feature in our first issue launching this spring.

Bellyache is a digital zine dedicated to the celebration of creativity. So often, what we create is dictated by who’s signing the cheque. As creatives, we are asked to put aside what’s meaningful and interesting to us in service of realizing someone else’s vision. We thought it was about time we stopped bellyaching and did something creative entirely for ourselves.
