Occupied East Jerusalem – The sound of hymns and the smell of incense filled the chapel where hundreds of people gathered for a memorial mass to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the killing of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.

The service, organised by her family and friends, was at the al-Liqaa Melkite Greek Catholic Church in the Beit Hanina neighbourhood in occupied East Jerusalem on Sunday.

“The bullet that killed her left us all in pain and changed our entire lives,” Linah Abu Akleh, Shireen’s niece, told Al Jazeera at the church.

“One year on, our family is still fighting for justice. One year on, we are still in pain over this insurmountable loss,” she said.

Arab League foreign ministers adopted a decision to readmit Syria after more than a decade of suspension on Sunday, a league spokesperson said, consolidating a regional push to normalise ties with President Bashar al-Assad.

The decision said Syria could resume its participation in Arab League meetings immediately, while calling for a resolution of the crisis resulting from Syria’s civil war, including the flight of refugees to neighbouring countries and drug smuggling across the region.

Three huge bags wedged under the handlebar of his red and white moped, Oleksandr rushes through the winding trails of the Donbas region, eastern Ukraine, to deliver bread to remaining locals.

Almost every day, Russian strikes hit the town of Siversk, about 10km (6.2 miles) from a front line that has barely moved since last summer.

Oleksandr has just picked up the bread at the Siversk town hall humanitarian centre, which gets about 2,500 loaves twice a week from the cities of Kramatorsk and Kostiantynivka.

Urawa Red Diamonds claimed the Asian Champions League title for the third time as Andre Carrillo’s own goal earned the Japanese side a 1-0 victory over defending champions Al Hilal and a 2-1 aggregate win.

Carrillo’s error three minutes into the second half swung the tie on Saturday in Urawa’s favour despite Al Hilal dominating for lengthy periods before the Japanese side added the crown to the titles they won in 2007 and 2017.

Ukraine says it downed a Russian hypersonic missile over the capital Kyiv using a newly acquired US Patriot defence system in what would be a first in its ability to intercept one of Moscow’s most modern weapons.

The Kinzhal missile is one of the latest and most advanced Russian weapons. Its military says the air-launched ballistic missile has a range of up to 2,000km (1,250 miles) and flies at 10 times the speed of sound, making it hard to intercept.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Friday signed a bill into law that gives a new board he controls the power to void development agreements its predecessor body signed with Disney – the latest episode in a feud between the conservative governor and the entertainment giant.

Under the bill, which passed the Republican-controlled legislature largely along party lines, the Central Tourism Oversight District Board – whose members are appointed by DeSantis – can cancel any deals signed up to three months before the board’s creation.

The head of Russia’s Wagner mercenary force threatened to pull his troops from the fight for Ukraine’s eastern city of Bakhmut. Yevgeny Prigozhin published an expletive-ridden video personally blaming top Russian defence chiefs for losses suffered by his fighters due to a lack of ammunition supplies.
Ukrainian officials dismissed the Wagner boss’s outburst as theatrics, reporting that Wagner mercenaries were reinforcing positions in Bakhmut from other parts of the front to try to seize the city before Moscow marks World War II Victory Day on May 9.

Washington, DC – The United States has dismissed as “ludicrous” Russia’s claim that it was responsible for a drone attack against the Kremlin, an incident that risks inflaming international tensions.

White House National Security spokesman John Kirby denied on Thursday any US involvement in the attack on Wednesday, which Moscow said targeted President Vladimir Putin. Kirby stressed that Washington is not even aware of the details of what happened.

Former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said that while trade between Pakistan and India makes “economic sense”, it cannot be viewed in isolation.

Qureshi made the remarks in an interview with Times of India published on Thursday. The PTI leader’s remarks come as his successor, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, is in Goa to attend a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Council of Foreign Ministers — the first visit to India by a Pakistani foreign minister in over a decade.

In the interview, Qureshi touched upon several aspects of Pak-India ties.

Asked about reports suggesting he was not keen on resuming trade with India, Qureshi said, “You see, the point is, I do see the benefits of trade between the two countries. It makes a lot of economic sense but it can’t be seen in isolation.

Drones, missiles and cross-border artillery took centre stage during the 62nd week of Russia’s war in Ukraine, as the 63rd began with a dramatic allegation from Russia – that Ukraine made an attempt on President Vladimir Putin’s life.

Ukraine may have targeted Russian fuel depots – a possible preamble to its expected counteroffensive. Russia, meanwhile, sharply intensified strikes against Ukrainian civilians, claiming dozens of lives.

The Canadian tax authority has reached a tentative deal with 35,000 striking employees, ending a two-week work stoppage that, at its peak, marked one of the largest, public-sector labour disputes in the country’s history.

In a statement on Thursday, the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) union said it had “secured a fair contract for members that exceeds the employer’s original offer before the launch of strike action” last month.

Aldar Properties will hold off any further investments in Egypt until conditions there stabilise, a senior executive said, as the Abu Dhabi-based real estate developer reported a 22 percent jump in first-quarter profit.

Aldar, along with Abu Dhabi fund ADQ, acquired about 85.5 percent of the Sixth of October for Development and Investment (SODIC) shares in 2021 for 6.1 billion Egyptian pounds ($198m), which at the time was worth about $387m.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at least two people were killed in Pavlohrad, a Ukrainian city and railway hub in the east, in an overnight Russian missile attack.

The Lebanese government has come under heavy criticism from activists and rights groups amid reports of Syrian refugees being detained and deported back to the war-torn nation.

On Tuesday, the Lebanese interior ministry decreed that all municipalities should conduct a survey to record the Syrians living there and to make sure they were documented before carrying out any transactions with them, including renting property to them.

Sudan’s warring factions have agreed in principle to a seven-day ceasefire from Thursday, neighbouring South Sudan announced, as more air raids and shooting in the Khartoum region disrupted the latest short-term truce.

A statement released on Tuesday by the foreign ministry of South Sudan, which had offered to mediate in the conflict, said its President Salva Kiir stressed the importance of a longer truce and of naming envoys to peace talks, to which both sides had agreed.
