“What can you do for yourself to make your life better, in the life that you’re living”
@billiecbarnes co-founder of @thestepmumcollective dropping some truths during our recent conversation. Sometimes it can be too easy to wallow in self-pity and go down a toxic rabbit hole of comparison and expectations, especially as womxn and especially as stepmothers. That’s why she and @mydietstartsonmonday created The Stepmum Collective to be a solutions-focused community.

Not only are @thestepmumcollective providing bonus mums a safe space to share their thoughts, advice and feelings but they also recently joined forces with @ukstepmum to create a petition to raise awareness and demand change to stepmums’ access to fertility treatment on the NHS.
🌷 in the UK, women are being denied fertility treatment, such as IVF on the NHS (National Health Service) simply because their partner has a child from a previous relationship.
🌷 we chat about the petition & its importance. It’s an issue close to our hearts because it can have far-reaching effects, not only for stepmoms but for all women.
🌷 the aim is to reach 100,000 signatures, you can read more, sign, share & support the petition via @thestepmumcollective’s bio link.

“... I sometimes think I’m a better step-mother than I am a mother...”
🌹 being hyper-aware and mindful of our bonus kids’ feelings, perceptions and wellbeing is something a lot of bonus parents come across - because (for better or for worse) our biological children are stuck with us as their parent so a lot of the time that love and relationship is intrinsic. But when it comes to bonus-kids, that kind of relationship can take a lot more work to foster and build. That kind of love is a choice.
🌹 I had such an incredible chat with @thestepmumcollective founders @billiecbarnes & @mydietstartsonmonday about how their parental role changed when having bio-kids.

“You knew what you were signing up for...” - the stereotype that no bonus parent needs to hear!
💫 @thestepmumcollective @mydietstartsonmonday telling it how it is and sharing some of the comments bonus mums get that
a) isn’t helpful
b) sets an unfair expectation
c) offers no support and only makes stepparents feel more isolated

Simple ways to start practicing gratitude
Paying it forward...
🎁 sharing your gratitudes with the people who bring you joy can do amazing things and spark a chain reaction of positivity. The Grateful Hearts Club founder Charla discusses some of the best ways to start practicing gratitude - if you’re worried about where to begin, what to write, how to start forming these positive habits, why not start with simply telling someone why you’re grateful for them and see where that leads you

We can all be more vulnerable 🌤
The Grateful Hearts Club founder Charla was able to use gratitude as a coping tool when she was going through a really dark time navigating the loss of her daughter and journey with infertility. She’s now on a mission to teach others how to do the same - understanding how gratitude can serve us, the positive habits we can form and the tangible benefits it brings.
🌤 and vulnerability is the key to connection. Charla doesn’t shy away from talking about her experience and hopes that it will inspire others to be more open about their challenges. Emotional vulnerability can be a tremendous source of strength because by allowing ourselves to be vulnerable, we can learn to understand ourselves, feel more empathy, forgive one another and know that we are worthy of love.

🌤 “Everything is impermanent”
🌤 i love these words from my latest guest @groundedminds creator @alannadeutrom who shares her experience with her music students and the power that being present with your emotions can give you and what they can teach you.
🌤 i feel like mindfulness and resilience go hand-in-hand because taking the time to be present and aware of ourselves allows us to trust our instincts, know our limits and empower us to bounce back from setbacks & challenges.
🌤 dealing with discomfort, sitting with our emotions and acknowledging our pain - not running away from it or burying it deep down and hoping it disappears is the only way we can build resilience
