A rising tide lifts all boats

❣️ although this quote is usually attributed to macro-economics, the same can be said sociologically. By practicing more kindness and patience with each other; raising one another up and celebrating successes instead of sinking ourselves in comparison, jealousy and bitterness, we pay it forward. You can be the good you want to see in the world - it starts with each of us.

Why The Lipstick Gang?

💄 every year, my friends and I organise our own version of Secret Santa - we choose a lip colour and set a budget. Everyone is responsible for buying a lipstick in that colour but free to choose the brand.

💄 we meet up before Christmas and have our lipstick swap - all the lipsticks go in a bag and everyone picks one for themselves. And even though as one by one we’ve all moved away from Hong Kong, we still keep up this tradition.

💄 the lipstick has come to be a symbol of our friendship, so much so that we even got matching lipstick tattoos (but that’s another story for another time).

💄 and that’s the story behind the name, this podcast is my ode to all friendships, old and new.

💄 so tell me, what’s your favourite lipstick?

So many of us are in a rush - rushing through the day, rushing to the weekend, rushing till the holidays, rushing through life to reach those milestones. But time is the greatest gift we have and if we slowed things down a bit to fully appreciate and allow time to work with us, not against us, then magical things can happen. And suddenly, every moment is a cherished moment of development ✨

Sometimes it can be too easy to wallow in self-pity and go down a toxic rabbit hole of comparison and expectations, especially as womxn and especially as stepmothers. Did you know adaptability helps build resilience? It’s important to set goals and work towards them, but guess what, sometimes things don’t go to plan. But what’s more important is how we roll with the punches. Being adaptable, flexible and creatively problem-solving means that the next time things don’t go to plan, we know how to handle it and how to bounce back, even stronger 💪

Not only are providing bonus mums a safe space to share their thoughts, advice and feelings but they also recently joined forces with to create a petition to raise awareness and demand change to stepmums’ access to fertility treatment on the NHS.

🌷 in the UK, women are being denied fertility treatment, such as IVF on the NHS (National Health Service) simply because their partner has a child from a previous relationship.

🌷 we chat about the petition & its importance. It’s an issue close to our hearts because it can have far-reaching effects, not only for stepmoms but for all women.

🌷 the aim is to reach 100,000 signatures, you can read more, sign, share & support the petition via ’s bio link.

Today’s ... Sitting on the sidelines and spectating may be playing it safe, but “safe” doesn’t really move you forward or give you much to work with. So take the leap and get in the game because the rewards could be more than you ever thought possible! 🌸

“... I sometimes think I’m a better step-mother than I am a mother...”

🌹 being hyper-aware and mindful of our bonus kids’ feelings, perceptions and wellbeing is something a lot of bonus parents come across - because (for better or for worse) our biological children are stuck with us as their parent so a lot of the time that love and relationship is intrinsic. But when it comes to bonus-kids, that kind of relationship can take a lot more work to foster and build. That kind of love is a choice.

🌹 I had such an incredible chat with founders & about how their parental role changed when having bio-kids.

b) sets an unfair expectation
c) offers no support and only makes stepparents feel more isolated

It can feel uncomfortable, awkward, challenging and sometimes, just damn difficult. But that’s because growth is by its very definition, a process of change, and this can feel unsettling.

🌹growth doesn’t come from our comfort zones, but rather from moments of adversity, times when we’re pushed beyond our comfortable limits. Just like building strength in your muscles, you’ve got to create some tension otherwise there won’t be any growth and you won’t get stronger.

🌹 life is like a muscle and if we leave things comfortable and easy, there’s no push for us to evolve.

🌹 growth might be unsettling and uncomfortable, but the alternative is stagnating and potentially being left behind... life can pass you by.

🌹 so the choice is yours... what path will you choose?

Procrastination has nothing to do with being lazy or lacking self-discipline, but why does it leave us feeling like s**t?

💫 when we procrastinate, not only are we putting things off but we’re also aware that not doing it is probably going to have a negative knock-on effect. But we do it anyway, and we feel worse/guilty for it.

💫 procrastination is something us humans do as a way to cope with what we perceive to be negative feelings - boredom, anxiety, frustration, self-doubt, resentment. Do you see where I’m going with this? It’s a cycle that we all engage in - in dealing with negative emotions, we procrastinate and practice avoidance, which makes us feel negative, which leads to more avoidance.

💫 so perhaps we need to start looking at procrastination as a symptom of our own mental health and how we’re managing our emotions. We can break this cycle - the solution comes from within.

💫 firstly, practice forgiveness with yourself. Try not to beat yourself up too much if you find yourself procrastinating, self forgiveness can allow for productivity.
💫 secondly, be compassionate and kind to yourself. If you feel good about yourself and foster more positive emotions, you’ll get out of your own way and feel more motivated to get stuff done.
💫 be mindful - when your mind starts to wander from the task at hand and you start to get itchy feet, take a moment; a deep breath and observe where it’s coming from and how you feel in that moment.
💫 and finally, remove temptation or distractions. If you find yourself mindlessly scrolling social media and distracting yourself - maybe take a digital break. Remove those apps and disable those app notifications!

💫 how do you deal with procrastination? Let me know in the comments 👇

It’s been a hot minute since I introduced myself so thought I’d say a quick Hi 👋

🌸 I’m Vanessa, founder & host of The Lipstick Gang - a podcast dedicated to having real conversations with real womxn. It’s an inclusive space celebrating people of all backgrounds, telling their real, raw and relatable stories. I’m hoping to build a community of support, inspiration and validation, providing a little digital togetherness in our current socially-distanced world.

🌸 I live in London with my fiancé, two cats and two step-kids, but I’m originally from Hong Kong. As you can probably guess from my backdrop, our house is full of all kinds of eclectic and random things, my dream is for my house to resemble the Natural History Museum or British Museum.

🌸 I started the podcast in November 2020, in the midst of painfully missing human connection, painfully missing my family and my friends who are scattered across the globe (group zoom calls are an ordeal to organise with all the time zones). I’m an extrovert by nature, so I absorb so much energy being around other people and I’ve been a total chatterbox for as long as I can remember... so, what better time to create a talking platform than during a pandemic!?

🌸 I’m so grateful for all this podcast has brought to my life already. Not only does it bring me joy, energy and mental balance but most importantly it’s given me an opportunity to connect and have conversations with people whom I might never have spoken to were it not for this platform.

🌸 finally, fun fact - this shirt belongs to my dad. Stole it about 7 years ago and he doesn’t seem to have noticed or asked for it back, so I guess it’s mine now? 🤷‍♀️

“Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn”

🌸 humans are naturally social creatures and what comes with that is our natural instinct to assimilate, to fit in, to seek approval from our peers. From the language we use and how we dress, to what we post online, how we’re perceived by others infiltrates every aspect of our lives.

🌸 Caring about what other people think can actually be form of self-censorship, whether we’re aware of it or not.

🌸 so I ask, if you’re constantly devoting your time to pleasing others, what’s left for you at the end of the day? Instead I invite you to think about these things the next time you’re worried about what other people might say...
▫️ are you being your authentic self? If you’re sure of who you are and what you stand for, what other people think will start to matter less.
▫️ there’s nothing wrong with criticism - you’re not in this world to please everyone, that’s an impossible task. What you need to learn is knowing whose opinions matter and whose don’t.
▫️ are you projecting your own fears and insecurities? Keep everything in perspective - what you worry about someone thinking may not even cross their minds in the first place.

How do you handle being a people pleaser?

🥀 one of my biggest challenges is saying “no”. I constantly take on too much without much consideration to what’s already on my plate or stuff I would be working on for myself, which inevitably leads to burn out.

🥀 luckily I have amazing people in my life who remind me to push back and say no... some of those people are the ones I’m doing stuff for too so that can get tricky 😅 but they also help me recognise when things are getting a bit overwhelming.

We all have bad days; moments of feeling inadequate; times we wish we could do over again, overwhelmed by anxiety and that’s ok... it’s human! Our negative feelings can serve us and help us work through situations but the important thing is to
💥 not ignore or bury them deep inside
💥 acknowledge your feelings
💥 understand where they’re coming from
💥 learn
💥 and let go

🌊 like waves of the ocean, let the emotions wash over you and let them leave.

Not sure who else needs to hear this today, but it was a great reminder for me...

🌸 sometimes we get obsessed with the idea that we only get one chance; in life, in love, in work, in everything. So we obsess about getting it perfect the first time around because we don’t think we’ll get another go around and we don’t want to “miss our chance”.

🌸 as we know, the pursuit of perfection can cause anxiety and stress; it can even prevent us from trying in the first place for fear of failure.

🌸 but life isn’t made up of “only one chance”s - its full of as many opportunities as we can create for ourselves. And we shouldn’t feel bad about trying, failing, learning and trying again.

Hell yes to saying no!

👯‍♀️ One of the things I loved talking to about was how she’s raising strong daughters.

👯‍♀️ Not only is she paving the way celebrating women in the trades creating but also leading by example as a single working mum - showing her girls the importance of saying no, drawing your line and having healthy boundaries.

🏎 she’s one of the many women around the world challenging gender stereotypes and paving the way for more diversity in the trades..... did I mention, she’s a total badass!?
