It's the obligation of governments to protect all people from the acts committed by companies, and the responsibility of companies to respect human rights, however, too often the benefits are obtained at the cost of abuses against those same rights.
Modern slavery doesn’t only happen in the developing world, it’s all around us and tipically out of sight. It can affect any business and can actually be closer than we think.
This risk of slavery exists in the raw materials and finished goods we are purchasing, in the "casual labour" of our distribution centres, and even in the individuals who serve our food, work in houses as nannies, in our office as cleaners, and many more.
⚠️ Consider this: One in every 130 adults and children around the world are victims of modern slavery including human trafficking, forced labor, exploitation, enslavement and slavery-like practices, debt bo***ge, and of course, child labor.
The first step towards combatting modern slavery and labour exploitation is identifying it. You can observe the ways in which workers are treated and keep your eyes open for the following signs:
👁 They are usually forced to live in overcrowded and unsanitary accommodations
👁 They are being constantly moved between jobs
👁 They are forced to work long hours or double shifts
👁 They are threatened by employers, both verbally and physically
👁 They suffer violations of their basic human rights and workers' rights
